Les Granges Hautes in the Dordogne

Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of staying in Les Granges Hautes for 4 nights on my trip. I have read the positive reviews on this website for this B&B, but I was wondering if anyone had any specific suggestions on which room to stay in.

I'm trying to decide between the Oiseaux room which is a family suite, and the Toscana. There are 2 of us travelling, and we just want to make sure that our room is a good size and not cramped. Also, we are told that the bathrooms are very different between the 2 rooms. We prefer to have a more spacious bathroom, but we also like a stand up shower, as we don't take baths.

Has anyone seen the 2 rooms and can make suggestions?

thanks in advance,
dk

Sorry I can't help on your specific question. We stayed in the Zorba room. But we loved it and the lovely large shower it had. I'm sure any of the rooms will be comparably lovely. For sure have dinner there one night. Jean Ives does a terrific duck confit.

Thanks Julie,

I know it probably seems like a silly question to most people. But, I'm having a hard time deciding between the rooms!

I can't find any pictures anywhere (other than what's on the website), and all I was told by Beatrice was that the bathrooms are very different. I can't even tell how big the rooms are.

Decisions decisions...

thanks again,
dk

I stayed in the Zorba...It had a nice, large shower with the pre set water temperature. It is on ground floor, about center.

Friends stayed in the Les Reves..upper floor, It alswo had a large shower, large room.

A nice place...

enjoy...........

what gracejoan said--the shower is large--in fact, one of the largest I've had anywhere. the room was about normal size for one outside Paris--thus bigger than a Paris room, but smaller than most US holiday inns. The one thing that was small was the room for the toilet. It was separate from the shower and sink area in a room all it's own which was hardly larger than the toilet itself so that you could practically get abrasions on your sensitive backside from the brick walls if you tried to whirl around in it--not that whirling in a toilet room is a necessity. Truly a small quibble when one considers the lovely surroundings, the cleanliness and the incredibly reasonable cost. I can't imagine that youd be anything but happy at this place.

Hi dk,

From the website:

Les oiseaux shower + toilet
(Suite)

Toscane tub + shower + toilet
Large baroque bathroom.

From this, I deduce, that the Oiseaux has a stand alone shower.

The Toscane has a tub with a shower head. Most likely a hand-held.

Also note that the Oiseaux is a large room, but it has a dbl and 2 twin beds in it. It is also under the eaves.

I'm leaning toward Toscane, but I use a European-style shower head at home.

The Zorba looks as if you can walk out into the garden.

Hope this helps.

Just curious: What is a "European style shower head" and how does it differ from an American-style shower head?

I asked Beatrice these questions. Specifically if the shower nozzle is attached to the wall - so your hands are free when you shower - makes sense? (I grew up in a house with that kind of a shower, so I kno what I'm talking about).

She told me that the bath in the Toscane is not practical for taking showers.

I think she got annoyed with me and told me to stay in a modern hotel...

I just wanted some info so I can compare. After all, there are no pictures of the bathroom. Wouldn't anyone want to know? Even the pictures of the room are tiny. I don't mind paying for the more expensive room, I just want to know what I'm getting and what the difference is...

Oh well, I was always told that I ask too many questions....

And Julie -

"get abrasions on your sensitive backside from the brick walls if you tried to whirl around"

OMG - That is SO funny!

We also stayed in Zorba and highly recommend it. You enter through the garden and it is just beautiful!

The Zorba was not available - otherwise I would have chosen it.
It was between the Toscane and Oiseaux.

What do people think of the location of Castelnaud-la-Chapelle? I was looking at La Tour de Cause B&B, which also looked nice...
