LECCE: Please help me choose a hotel...

We will have a car for day trips, but would like to be in the historic center of the city.

These hotels seem to have great locations and TA reviews. I was wondering if some of you fellow fodorites have stayed in any of them...

CASA DEI MERCANTI
NONNA IOLE (or Jole?)
PRESTIGE B&B
L'ORANGERIE D'EPOQUE
B&B PALAZZO BERNARDINI

Thanks!
dina

I have not stayed at any of these hotels but when we were in Lecce, we choose a place outside of the city (unless you are dead set on staying within the city) in a place called Arnesano. The B&B is called Villa Guiliana and I can very highly recommend. It is run by a wonderful young man who speaks perfect English, and his mother. They have about 6 rooms and they are very comfortable, large and within a beautiful garden setting. Check out the reviews on TA.

Flame, i've read your posts (GREAT, btw), and i did out the villa guillana. it does look beautiful and sounds wonderful. i do prefer to stay in the old center of the city, though, so i did scratch it off my list for now.

thanks for responding so quickly!

I can highly recommend the Palazzo Rollo, a well run B&B located right in the center WITH ITS OWN PARKING!
Here's the web page: http://www.palazzorollo.it/

Thanks, steve. I love your web page. Am thinking of printing it out...

Those Palazzo Rollo apartments seem really nice. There are 4 of us, so it might work out really nicely.

Was driving in and out of Lecce and to the B&B difficult?

Also, since you visited both places, I'm torn between Polignano a Mare, and Ostuni, and Martina Franca for our second base in puglia. Which did you find most charming?

thanks!!

We drove in and out of Lecce several times and it wasn't too bad. It was definitely worth staying in a centrally located place like Palazzo Rollo.

Regarding the other towns you mentioned, here's my opinion;

Martina Franca - We got a bad impression of Martina Franca because we were there when things were dead and there was a nasty wind blowing trash all over the street. Also, it's up in the hills, which is nice for the view but is a bit of a hassle driving into and out of. I think it is much better to stay on the coast, which means Polignano or Ostuni.

Polignano was nice but I don't know if I would want to stay there.

Ostuni was very convenient and as I explained on my page, the area is filled with masseria and we stayed in one of them. This area around Ostuni is very rustic and we enjoyed our stay there. It was very convenient to drive up or down the coast, or drive up into the surrounding hills.

Thanks, Steve.

i like your idea of staying along the coast -- especially since we will have spent a week in umbria in the countryside, and then later some time in urban lecce.

So Polignano -- i hope you don't mind if i ask why you wouldn't stay there if it was nice. also, would you stay IN ostuni if you had found a place you really liked there?

there ARE a lot of nice masserias near ostuni, and i'm having fun sifting through them...

thanks again!

I really didn't get a good feel for Polignano. It has a very interesting old town and we enjoyed the great restaurant where we had lunch, but I never cjecked out hotels there.

In Ostuni? Yes,that would be OK. Lots of people like Ostuni.

One more thought on your last question:

After staying in Lecce, which is a real city, it will be a nice contrast to stay in one of the masseria in the Ostuni area.

I found a really cute B and Bs in the old town in Polignano: Santo Stefano and dei Serafini.
So that's why I'm leaning towards there.

I also am looking at a couple of places in ostuni and some masserias outside of ostuni.
