Leaving for Iceland in 3 days - help!

We're very excited to be taking a last minute trip to Iceland, mainly to see the volcano (a dream of mine). We're doing Hotel Ranga 4 nights, then on our own for 10 days, then 3 days in Reykjavik.

We're 50-ish. We're not big hikers, per se, but are great at wandering, indoors or out. We're spa people, love history and art, and I'm a photographer.

I've read the forums but still feel a bit behind the 8-ball because I usually do a lot of research when travelling but won't have the time this trip, so pls pardon any silly questions.

Here's what I'm wondering:

- Is 4 nights too long at Ranga?
- Is 3 days too long in Reykjavik?
- Will helicopter be enough to satiate my volcano-watching?
- Are there waiting lists or pre-booking req'd for Superjeeps or snowmobiles to the volcano?
- Is 10 days too long / too short for driving?
- How far can we get / should we go in that 10 days?
- Will we be OK without pre-booking accommodation on the driving part?
- Is it "spring" enough yet for puffins and other birds?
- Other than the usual highlights found in the books (which I haven't bought yet), what are your favourite haunts, sites and surprises from travelling there?
- Pls feel free to share other tips and ideas; we'd love to hear them

Thanks so very much for your experiences!
