I had a leather trench made at a little shop in Santa Croce 25 years ago* and it is still in service! Don't recall the name but it was a working tailor shop - I even got to pick the hide used. Went back for two fittings and picked it up at the end of the week.
Can't claim to be an expert, was referred to the place by a friend. Would never buy at market stall or one of those three feet wide storefronts. Google Florence leather scams to find things like http://girlinflorence.com/2015/03/18...mart-in-italy/
<i>(*Yes, I know it is incredible that I was able to travel internationally at age 5. Call me precocious. </i

We were in Florence over Christmas holiday and were oquite surprised at the low quality of the leather goods at the shops along Santa Croce. It was really difficult to find leather goods actually made in Italy, so I actually went up buying a furlough bag, and my husband bought a wallet and a belt of unknown origin. We actually spent more money on nice one goods – a couple of sweaters, a scarf and a lovely merino wool pull over.
