Le Meridian - Munich
The rates are lower than all the other 5 stars during Christmas. It looks a little far away from the Marienplatz on the map. I hate to admit the rates being low is scaring me off. I'm cynical enough to say "Why is that?". Am I wrong to be concerned? I'd love to be told I am.

i would estimate about a 15 minute walk from marienplatz.
the hotel is right next to the main train station so if you are arriving or leaving by train this is very convenient.
the hotel is strangely located for a le meridian. usually meridian and ritz carlton, etc (as you know)are located among the most expensive restaurants and shops in a city. this is not the case in munich. le meridian is in a neighborhood of downmarket pensions and hostels, kebab shops and sex shops.
this is not to say that it is a "bad" or unsafe neighborhood as munich is overall very safe. i would have no problem staying in this location and i only mention the surroundings to try to give you a possible reason why it may be struggling and offering low rates.

I've stayed at LeMeridien in Munich and it is, as described above, directly across from the main rail station and a short walk to the Marienplatz. It is not in any way a downscale place; rooms are large and well-fitted out.
There are many ethnic type carry-out restaurants in the adjoining blocks and yes, there is a sex shop across the street..but there is a HUGE Beate Uhse sex shop even CLOSER to the Marienplatz so what does that tell you? Europeans have a much different attitude toward these things than those in the US seem to.
I would not hesitate to stay there again and if you let your cynicism get in the way of a good deal there is little to be done about it.

That answers my question about the rate. I don't mind the neighborhood as we will most likely be out and around most of the day anyway. Glad to hear the hotel is nice. I couldn't decide on the Hotel Opera or Le Meridian.

We just returned from 5 nights at Le Meridian in Munich. We very much enjoyed it. Ask for robes and slippers when you check in. We relaxed after a long day of sightseeing in the pool and sauna (check it out-there are stars on the ceiling). location is great to catch the S or U bahn. have fun

Chalk it up to being lucky: Stayed at Le Meridien Munich for 6 days in March and would not hesitate to recommend it. If you are adverse to the 10-15 minute walk to the Marienplatz then the subway is directly across the street at the Hauptbahnhof.

We enjoyed our stay of 2 years ago there so very much. A very nice hotel with a wonderful staff. We found all kinds of restaurants in the area. Went into Herties-a department store with a cafeteria that we liked. When we went to Rothenburg overnight they were nice to allow us to store our luggage so we did not have to take it with us. I think you will be pleased with the hotel.

Last summer had planned to return to the Platzl Hotel where we had stayed a few years earlier, but when I saw the rates there had nearly doubled, I started looked. I booked Le Meridien nearly 10 months ahead and as a result got a fantastic deal (just a little over 100 euro per night!). We loved it. Huge room, very nicely furnished, giant plasma TV, free high speed internet service, extremely pleasant and helpful staff. We rolled our luggage right across the street to and from the train station which was very easy (although actually we realized later we could go under the street and come up on an escalator on the other side), even easier!
The neighborhood doesn't bother us, and we loved the walk to Marienplatz as it is mainly down the middle of the very wide pedestrian street.
I'm usually like you, "what is wrong with the place to offer these prices". But don't worry. We've found a new best place to stay in Munich assuming we can get super rates again. Although when I checked last summer just before we arrived, I couldn't find any rates below about $325 euro!
