Layover in Berlin - Time to do anything?
My wife and I have an overnight layover in Berlin at Tegel airport after our trip to Italy. We arrive at 6pm into Tegel airport from Naples, Italy and then at 10am the next morning we travel back to the U.S. A few questions....
1. Is there anything we would have time to do to see something in Berlin that night? Obviously we can go out to dinner, but would we have time to even see a sight or two? Of course it's nighttime, so probably not, but it's just a thought!
2. Should we stay near the airport since we fly out at 10am the next morning or find something in the city center? I'm assuming by the airport. Any recommendations? Any suggestions on how to get to a good area of the city for dinner from the airport via public transit? Or is a cab the best option?
3. We are flying Air Berlin. Any idea on if we have to get our bags after arriving in Berlin? Or will they just stay in the airport overnight and be loaded on to our 10am flight? It's the same airline so I thought maybe that would be allowed.
Thanks in advance!

I prefer to stay in the city rather that at the airport hotel overnight....
Tegel is about 20 euros max from the central area of the Reichstag,
Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden , Gendarmenmarkt
Try to make preservation at the restaurant on the top of Reichstag to see the famous Cupola.
You can do quite a bit at night walking around the above areas.
..weather permitting.

First of all, do spend the night in a hotel in the city center (Berlin-Mitte - Gendarmenmarkt/Unter den Linden area). Which hotel you choose depends on your budget. The very best one in the area is the Hote de Rome, and still pretty good are the Hilton and the Sofitel on the Gendarmenmarkt, but there are cheaper hotels available.
The taxi takes 20 min to and from Tegel and, as said, costs about 20€ (there is also a bus, but you lose less time by using a taxi).
Secondly, I would recommend simply walking along Unter den Linden and around Gendarmenmarkt. A short sidetrip to Oranienburger Straße and Hackesche Höfe is also recommendable. At night, you will see all those magnificent historical buildings, beautifully illuminated.
Another option would be riding public bus no. 100. It is a double decker bus with excellent view from the open upper deck. It is like a sightseeing bus, except that it is dirt cheap. You can do it hop-on/hop-off and take it to and from.
In the mentioned area, there is a plethora of restaurants of all classes, especially around Gendarmenmarkt and along Oranienburger Straße. For inexpensive traditional fare, you may try Nante Eck at the corner of Unter den Linden/Friedrichstraße (www.nante-eck.de).
It should be possible that your check your baggage through.
