lauterbrunnen-wengen 4 days
Hi I’m visiting Bernese Oberland-03/10/14 to 07/10/14- 4 days, arriving from Paris –proceeding to Frankfurt 2 adults and 1 child (13 yrs)
Planned an itinerary, need ur support on its fine tuning
i'have a swiss 4 day pass
Day 1: Arrive from paris to wengen
Lauterbrunnen arr 13:25 Wengen Arr 13:51
Day 1: Wengen- Maennlichen (Cable Car)- Kliene Scheidegg (Hike) (1:30 hr). Evening Wengen (i dont know is this is possible -start around 15:00- else suggest alternatives)
Day 2: Wengen- Jungfraujoch (Train)- Grindewald-First- Grindewald- Wengen (Train)
Day 3: Wengen down to Lauterbrunnen, cablecar up to Grutchalp, walk to Murren(1:50 hr),and then take the gondola up to Schilithorn.. After that gondola from Murren down to Stechelberg through Gimmelwald. Bus or walk to Trumelbach(???) falls. then bus or walk to Lauterbrunnen station then train back to Wengen
Day 4: The last day we take a break from mountains and so we do Interlaken, boat trip to Brienz, stop in Gissibach. lunch in Interlaken ,return to Wengen and explore the village more.
OR
stay in wengen, relax, play mini golf , complete the above itineraries if left pending. -( Wengen- Maennlichen (Cable Car)- Kliene Scheidegg (Hike)
*the sequence can be swapped according to the weather

If you have a SwissPass that will be good on any of the Post buses and if you can take a bus to Trummelbach Falls I would do so.
Don't forget that the viewing area and the access to it are privately owned and charge an admission fee.
It is certainly an unforgettable experience IMO.

So you will pay full fare on day 5 (Wengen - Basel SBB: 72 CHF/pax), the Jungfraujoch supplement with Swiss Pass on day 2 (129 CHF)and half fare to Maennlichen and First.

Hi mehtani,
Just like to remind you that you can't make certain plans to see the Jungfrau or the Schilthorn on specific days -- ascending the peaks depends entirely on the weather. You need to look at the forecasts for each day and ask at your hotel if it will be a good day to ascend. You should also have some backup plans in case it's too cloudy for good views at the top.

Not if you spring for first class tickets where you can sit in a very nice parlor inside! Good place for lunch as well, much better than anywhere in Interlaken. If you have a 2nd class 4 day Swiss pass you can just pay the supplement to get into the first class cabin. Getting off at Giessbach might not work out, you will have to wait for the next boat to come around which may be two hours or so. Be sure to carefully consult the boat schedule and work out your timing.
Day 1: certainly do-able if you get going by around 15:00.

Day 3: also possible.

Day 3 I have done a few times and IMO it is the finest excursion in the whole area including the Jungfraujoch because of its many varied and awesome components - don't miss a stop in Gimmelwald, remote Gimmelwald before taking the cable way that from it seems to plunge down to the valley floor at Stechelberg (from where postal buses take you to Lauterbrunnen - all transports are fully covered by a Swiss Pass except Murren to Piz Gloria is 50 % off (still a sizable reduction)- for details on this an other excursions I always refer two fine sites detailing the Jungfrau Region and its transports: www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.swisstravelsystem.com.

I think October is a fine time to visit.
The sun sets around 7 pm in early October, so you should have sufficient time to do the activities listed on Day 1 if you get going as soon as you can.
Do be aware that the cablecar to Mannlichen runs every 20 minutes that time of year with the last accent at 4:50 pm.

Gimmelwald in October?
It will be a ghost town.
Like watching paint dry.
Like looking at potting sheds along the
mews of Church Road in Old Windsor.
The hotel Keith and I always stay at in Wengen closes the third week of September until the start of the ski season.
Good to hear from Kim San Jose who knows her stuff!!!!

Gimmelwald is a best an hour or so linger - just for the out in the middle of nowhere feeling with just awesome Alps all around - just pass thru though the local hotel is known for its unique mountain food like Rostli.

You know one of the BEST things about being in Switzerland in October is?
You won't have to deal with a whole bunch of other people crowding into trains and onto gondolas and you certainly won't have to listen to any WHINING.

If the weather is fine, trains to the Bernese Oberland are often crowded during the Swiss automm school holidays (first half of October); queues at cablecar and gondola stations are very common then.

From Murren there is a sweet short downhill stroll on a paved foot path to Gimmelwald - along the edge of the cliff so views are awesome - so for a nice stroll walk from Murren down to Gimmelwald.

From Brienz we took the Brinezer Steam Railway up to the top of the mountain backdropping Brienz - 50% off with a Swiss Pass and then we walked down beautiful zigzagging gently descending paths to Brienz - with the Jungfrau Massif and lake below in full view the whole time.
One of the nicest things I've done - Geissbach Falls is nice but not nearly so awesome IME.

I understand these r some of the expenses I’ve to incur ... thanx for the information
Definitely my plans are fluidic – will keep options open depending on weather …this was the time we could travel! Hoping for a good weather and lesser crowds …
What I understand from the discussions is that with an early start and weather gods favoring my itinerary is OK and achievable.
Day 3: Really excited about Mürren – Gimmelwald as such en-route …can plan a stop depending on time.
Just thinking aloud- on such a short trip should we do both Jungfraujoch and to Schilithorn or any one can be avoided ???
Day 4: boat trip to Brienz- travelling from India –we are scared of the chills,
“layers of clothing and a bottle of baileys with coffee should do the trick”
And lunch on board with boating sounds a good idea after hectic days

Weather in October could be dim - lots of rain and wet weather at that time IME - if doing the Jungfraujoch and the skies are clear hop on it - not worth it in clouds or fog once up top for all the money spent.

Well if you do the Murren loop then the Schilthorn is just a few-hour detour off that so does not take all day or a half day as the Jungfraujoch trip would.
But if possible I'd do both - very different experiences.

There would have been cheaper solutions with other passes, but as you already bought the 4 days Swiss Pass, this remark will be of no interest for you.
