Lauterbrunnen and Appenzell base for hiking, how many days?

Jump to last reply

Hello all. I received some advice on a post of mine from a couple of months ago. Unfortunately certain events kept me from trip planning over the past month. I'm trying to organize my solo trip to Switzerland in the 2nd and 3rd weeks of October with my main focus being hiking through the valleys, mountains, and pastoral areas. I will not be visiting Geneva or Zermatt. I am looking into having my hotel base in Lauterbrunnen based on past advice but need some guidance before further planning. I cannot get a grasp of how much time I would need -- is 6 nights in Lauterbrunnen a good stay to experience the varied scenery in the area at a fairly leisurely pace? I was thinking of doing maybe one day in Lucerne since it was highly recommended, maybe at the beginning of my trip given the proximity to Zurich. I also want to spend a day back and forth on the Bernina Express or equivalent train. Then for a change in scenery I was thinking of 3 days in the Appenzell region based on past recommendations.

I have 10-14 days to spare for all of this. Any itinerary help would be appreciated. Do I spend one to two nights between Zurich and Lucerne on arrival, ?6 nights in Lauterbrunnen as main hiking base, do Bernina Express one day and then spend 3 nights in Appenzell region? Not sure where my base for Bernina Express should be.

Also, I read somewhere that some cable cars are not covered by a Swiss Pass. Is that true? In the general Lauterbrunnen/Murren/Wengen area are cable cars covered 100% by Swiss Pass?
