latin quarter, paris hotel

Hi,first-timer here, hoping to be able to plan a trip with my sister in early June. Can anyone recommend a safe, clean, reasonable (cheap!) hotel in the Latin quarter? Thanks!!!!

I have been doing quite a bit of research for my trip in September and the Familia, the Minerve, and The Grand des Ecoles are always mentioned as good budget choices in the latin quarter. I am staying at the Familia ( but no a/c there..)Good Luck!

Wow! As I mentioned, I'm a first-timer to the boards, as well as to France. Thanks for your fast response! As to our budget - I've found packages for 7 nights, incl. airfare, for less than $1,000 per person - my sister is hoping that we can find something for $850 or less, hotel and air (from NYC). I'm just not familiar with where the Latin Quarter even is! Do you know which "addirondesment?" Please excuse my spelling and ignorance, but hopefully you know what I mean. Thanks again!!

I had a wonderful stay at Hotel la Manufacture in the 13th, right off of Place d'Italie. It is close to two metro stops and the neighborhood was very good, with many shops and cafés. There was a lot of nightlife in the area and we felt very safe at night.

I saw just recently that France Vacations was offering a package for 7 nights at the Manufacture for around $750.

parissister the Latin quarter is in the 5th and is a great location for walking to everything you will want to see, close to multiple metro stops, lots of great cafes, shops, etc.

I have stayed at the Familia and it is a good choice if you don't need a/c. Grab yourself a Fodors guidebook or similar and take a look at the arr. maps. You will love Paris!

Some of the packages (like the ones from gotoday.com or VirginVacations.com) are tough to beat price-wise. The *think* the lowest you can reasonably expect to pay per night by booking a hotel on your own is 80 - 90 EUROS for a double in a decent area, so you can see how the 7 nights can easily eat up your entire budget. Go too low and you could end up with a very depressing room or a location that is convenient to nothing. The package might be the best way to stay within your budget, considering that air from NYC is about $350, that only leaves you $650 dollars left for 7 nights hotel (that would be approximately 77 Euros per night). If you use a package, be sure to check the hotel location on a map - all will claim to be 'steps from the Seine', 'Near Notre Dame' etc. you need to check the street address. The package hotels may not be as charming as the smaller Paris hotels, but should be clean, safe etc. Also a few of the packages also include airport transportation and museum passes!

The Abbatial St. Germain is right on Blvd St. Germain in the heart of the Latin Quarter, close to Notre Dame and the Pantheon. It should definitely be in your price range. Rooms are small but well-decorated and clean, with nice marble bathrooms. It's a block and a half away from the Maubert Mutualite metro station.

Grantop, even from NYC can airfare for June be less than $400??
Orbitz is listing $600+-700+ for randomly selected dates of June 4-10, for example. (which, as you say, makes the package look pretty good, depending on hotels' actual locations - even that could be tolerable if close to a Metro stop).

The Latin Quarter (5th) is a good choice as is the Saint Germain (6th). There are many good inexpensive hotels in this area. I just stayed at the Hotel St Jacques which starts at 85€ for a double. That plus the "average" airfare from NYC to Paris will be in your budget range. (Booking online through sites such as ORbitz will probably give you the best airfare). I loved the hotel and would definitly stay there again. I have also stayed at the Minerve (mentioned above) which was also very good. If you decide you need to go even less expensive, the St Andre des Arts in the 6th is also good. I think they are about 70€ for a double. None of these have AC but I really don't think you need it. I have been in Paris in two recent July's without AC and was fine. All these hotels are on the internet - try france-hotel-online.com or 123france.com.

Sometimes you can do better with a package but often not. Be careful of the hotels they put you in - often they are in outer areas (though still considered central Paris). They may have some ammenities like AC but often lack charm. For a first time trip I really think you will prefer being in the 5th or 6th. Have a great time.

parissister with only $350 for 7 nights in a hotel - or approximately 42 Euros per night. Not good, and as we both have said that might make the package worth a second look. You are dead on about hotel locations and I do hope if parissister books a package that she will do so with map in hand!

I second the suggestion of Abbatial St.Germain. It's in the 5th district but on Blvd.St. Germain and very close to St. Germain des Pres in the 6th district.

hmm, technical problems made my post fairly useless! What I was saying is that parisister's budget for AIR & HOTEL is $1,000 (her sister would like it to be less) Travelnut, I posted using what air is now, but you are seeing June air for an average of $650 that leaves her with $350 for 7 nights in a hotel - or approximately 42 Euros per night. Not good, and as we both have said that might make the package worth a second look. You are dead on about hotel locations and I do hope if parissister books a package that she will do so with map in hand!

The hotel recommendations here are great - but did anyone read more than the first post? The OP later states her budget and I don't think she can get air and 6 or 7 nights at these hotels for under $1,000 total.

Parissister, was the first night of the package spent on the plane? Do you need the hotel for 6 nights or 7?

Hello, Parissister. We are booked at the Hotel de L'Esperance on rue Pascal at the end of May on the recommendation of family who have stayed there several times. We are paying 84 euros/night, and have found the hotel to be most responsive and helpful in e-mail correspondence. If you do a search on tripadvisor or Google you will find more information.

The biggest favor you can do yourself right now is get a map of Paris! The arrondisements spiral outwards by number. 5th = Latin Quarter is great because of its central location and all it has to offer with restaurants, shops, parks - but the Marais, St. Germaine, the 7th might work for you too. Rather than pick a specific hotel, I'd pick a district, the 5th is a good place to start - but it is a very busy and popular neighborhood. Depends what you're looking for. I've stayed there but gave $100 for a nice 3-star hotel room right on St. Mich. in summer. Reasonable for Paris but not the cheapest.

Suze, wasn't your hotel on Blvd. St. Michel pretty noisy especially in summertime? Just curious because every time I see Blvd. St. Michel it is busy.

When a package says $1000 it is per person. If there are two people going that's a total of $2000. Even if the airfare booked separately is $650 each that still leaves $350 EACH for hotel. Since they would be staying in a double (that's what the package would put them in) that means $700 for the 7 nights, not $42. Finding a double hotel room in central Paris for $100 is quite easy.
