last minute trip to Rome and southern Italy may 2013

We are taking a trip to celebrate our 20th anniversary between 3rd and 13th of may .

This is planned at the last minute so all we have currently is arrival into Rome and departure from Naples .

we had originally planned to do rome 4 nights , sorrento 3 positano 2 and naples one night .

However not so sure that we need 5 nights in the area or 4 night sin Rome .

The whole idea of the trip is to soak in the Italian way of life , enjoy the prety scenery and the great architecture and get some great food and wine . Do not want to spend too much time in museums etc .

Any suggestions ?

Also was wondering if we should change to add 3 nights in Puglia by reducing two nights in rome and two in amalfi coast .

The second was to stay with Rome and the Amalfi coast but add two nights in a farm agriturismo in solerno area .

all advice is welcome

Thanks

I can recommend a wonderful agriturismo in Minori on the Amalfi coast. Agriturismo Villa Maria.
DH and I stayed there last October for 5 nights and loved it. Beautiful views, surrounded by lemon trees, welcoming and lovely family, nice clean rooms and a very reasonable price.
We took the half board and the food was delicious, all grown or made on property.
It is a fair hike up to it from the road but doable if you are in decent shape. (I have bad knees and it was fine)

In Sorrento I can highly recommend the Hotel Mediterraneo and in Naples the Hotel Piazza Bellini.

4, 3, 2 and 1 sounds like moving around a lot to me. I wouldn't add another destination.

I would not spend 3 nights in Sorrento. I really don't find it that interesting.

I'd go to a lot of places before I'd go to Sorrento.

Are you coming from the US?

If you really don't like cities you might want to take a day off Rome, but there is plenty to do there that is out of doors and doesn't include museums. It does, however, include history, churches, ruins and architecture.

Sorrento is best as a base for travel to Capri, Pompeii, and Naples. But it's on the Gulf of Naples, not the Amalfi coast. I found it a pretty town, with lush foliage from the volcanic ash in the soil. Positano is best for enjoying the stunning view of the AC and buying expensive clothes and souvenirs. The town of Amalfi also has the views, but feels more like a real Italian town.

May is the beginning of the season on the AC. Fewer ferries are available, and those along the AC may not have started yet.

I agree that 4, 3, 2 and 1 is too much moving around. I think 4 days in Rome is good, as it gives you plenty of time to wander and to do day trips if you like.

If you want to see Pompeii, then staying in Sorrento makes sense. However, if you want the beauty and relaxation of the Amalfi Coast, then you should stay somewhere on the AC. Positano is always my choice.

The ferries start running on the AC in April, so things will be in full swing by the time you arrive in May.

Use www.venere.com to search for lodging.

Hi thank you all ! We are coming from India and had planned on getting a nice rental home and travelling around the area but the days of the week are not wirking out .

What place should one base oneself in AC area . The idea to stay in Sorento was to take day trips to Capri ischia and Pompeii
