Last minute Italy itinerary questions!

Hello,

We are leaving next Friday (Sept.7) for Italy (we had less than a month to plan this trip - yikes!) and I think we're looking pretty good but I have just a few questions and I'm hoping you can offer me some advice/suggestions. Here is what we have planned to far:

Sept. 8 - arrive Rome - take train to Sorrento - meeting friends who are staying there as well.
Sept. 9 Sorrento - Capri
Sept. 10 Sorrento - Pompeii/Mt. Vesuvius
Sept. 11 - depart Sorrento and head north towards Tuscany
Sept. 11 - ? suggest a place between Sorrento and Siena
Sept. 12 - ? - Tuscany - Siena?
Sept. 13 - ? - Siena - Florence?
Sept. 14 - Cinque Terre
Sept. 15 - Cinque Terre
Sept. 16 - Cinque Terre
Sept. 17 - Milan (husband has a conference)
Sept. 18 - Milan
Sept. 19 - Milan
Sept. 20 - train to Rome - stay in Rome
Sept. 21 - Rome
Sept. 22 - fly home

Here is my dilemma. We have all our hotels booked except for the 11th, 12th and 13th. It's about a 6 hour train ride from Sorrento to Siena so instead of spending most of the day travelling (we are not early risers we are trying to find a small town that's between Sorrento and Siena (2 or 3 hours by train) then we'll probably head to Siena on the 12th. I know the area between Sorrento and Siena is quite large but can anyone suggest what we do with our time for the nights of the 11th, 12th and 13th? Sorry this is long! Thanks for any help/advice/suggestions!

I would get a car as you leave Sorrento and keep it in Tuscany and drop it in La Spezia as you start your CT adventure. Siena is not on the main train line---you must change in Chiusi. The only spot to stop enroute is Orvieto, if you must.
Having the car will let you really see Tuscany. Good luck !

BTW, we will be there the same dates, but in Piemonte and the lakes.

Thanks - that helps! We've gone back and forth with the car idea since we won't need it for most of the places we're visiting but I think it might make sense to have one in Tuscany. Bob - hope you have a great time! Thanks again!

Yes, Orvieto definitely. Be sure to take the underground tour. Very interesting!

Buon viaggio!
