Laptop in Croatia
Hi guys, hope you all had a great Xmas. I am finally going to put my dream of turning our house on an island in Croatia into a B&B. Going back for the whole summer in 2007 to start putting things into motion. Need advice as to purchasing a satelitte dish, and laptop? computer so my guests will have access to the internet.. etc. DO I buy the computer down there or can I buy one in U.S. or Canada ? Is there a website that you can recommend where I could advertise/promote it? Any ideas would be very helpful....

First thing I'd do is find out what kind of satellite coverage is available. Satellite traffic is "beamed" to maximize power over a demographic region. If Croatia is considered a "backwater" by the internet providers, you'll never get off the ground (so to speak).
The good news is that if there is one, the satellite ISP will probably provide the dish, receiver, and internet router as part of your sign-up deal.
You can buy a laptop anywhere in the world.

Sky-DSL would be an option. It's on Eutelsat and covers Croatia, however it's based in Germany and relies on phone lines for the uplink. If you know where to buy, computer parts are cheaper than in the US only in Germany and the Netherlands. Sky-DSL supplies a complete package containing all you need to start instantly.

Were I to have a computer available for guests to use, it would be a desktop rather than a laptop. Laptops are just too vulnerable to damage from dropping or liquid spills. You and I look after our computers, but guests don't always take the same care.
Whether to buy in the US or Croatia? Two issues to consider would be: 1) warranty/service; 2) keyboard layout.
