Landmannalaugar: Tour or Car Rental?

I'll be in Iceland July 7-14. My wife and I want to go to Landmannalaugar for a day trip out of Hella (we are staying at Guest House Nonni) and do some hiking. I'm trying to decide whether to book a tour or drive ourselves.
If we drive there, itt will be the only time I will need a 4x4 car in Iceland, and I'm not averse to renting one for the whole time if that is the play, but wanted to know a couple of things:

For those who have used them, do the Day Tours offered give you a decent amount of time for hiking? I see where they say that you can choose to either soak in the hot springs or do a hike I want to do both!

Are the F roads out of Hella to Landmannalaugar, F225, 224 and 208 easily driven with a 4x4? I've read the Iceland 24 blog and it talks about some river crossings. Any experience of that for those who have been around July?

Thanks in advance for the help!
