Lamezia Terme, Italy

We are to have a 3 or 4 day stay in Lamezia Terme for a family get together...HELP....what is there ...what is it like... and where to stay??? We are in our 70's and are not looking for bare bones accommodations, but charming doesn't hurt...how to get there and possibly we will be traveling to or coming from Sicily. We have done quite a bit of travel in the past, but not sure we want to get behind the wheel of a car...

If you are in Sicily, you can take the train or the bus to Lamezia Terme. For me, the train is more comfortable and it is the same hours. It is long journey, so bring food!

Lamezia Terme has an airport so if you leave from different regions of Italy, not Sicily, maybe best to fly. But it is not good to drive in Calabria.

When dp you visit? In the summer it is very very hot in Calabria. You must have air conditioning in the hotel. Maybe it is best if you find a hotel on Expedia.

Most people visit Lamezia Terme for the spa, which is very popular with English speakers. The Savant Hotel is about 5 miles from the spa, the Caronte Terme, which is not really in the town of Lamezia Terme. The Savant Hotel is in the center of town. I had a look on Google Street View, and the area doesn't look very charming.

I'm not sure which hotel you mean by the "Lamezia", as several hotels and B&Bs have Lamezia in the name. If it's the THotel Lamezia, it's even further away, and seems to be out in the countryside, which might be a problem if you'll be getting together with family members.

Do you know where your other family members are staying? Looking at a map on www.booking.com , which is my go-to hotel booking site, I see that the hotels in the area are very spread out, so it would probably be a good idea to consult with some of the other members of your family before deciding where to stay.

I've never been to Lamezia Terme, so I can't help much with what there is to do or see there. There should be some pretty coastal scenery, so you might want to stay near the coast, all other things being equal. Neither of the hotels you mention is very near the coast.

You really should check out reviews of the hotels. Booking.com has very reliable guest reviews, because they only allow people who have booked through them and actually stayed there to post a review. TripAdvisor has more reviews, but they don't restrict who can post them, so you have to consider that the very good reviews may be planted by the hotel, and the very bad reviews may be planted by a competitor. I weed out the best and the worst, and pay more attention to the middle of the range.

Also, use Google Street view to get an idea of the area. Much of the center of Lamezia Terme seems to be quite run down.

My family comes from Nicastro and Sambiase in Lamezia Terme and we've been there many times. We always stay at the Savant Hotel in Nicastro on Via Capitano Manfredi 8, which is very comfortable hotel and very popular. Their restaurant is also very good. It's located less than a five minute walk from Corso Numistrano, which is the main passaggiata spot in the evenings.

Falerna Marino is about 20 minutes away by car and my favorite pizzeria in the whole world is there; Pizzeria Zi Pino.

Tropea is a short drive south, Le Castelle is a 10th century Norman castle about 45 minutes away, and the beaches are very popular.

Buon viaggio,

rbciao-Fantastic!! My father was born in Nicastro and raised in San Mango D'Aquino. I still have a cousin there, in San Mango, with the same name as mine. I've been in San Mango a few times, but never in Nicastro. It's nice to meet someone with a similar ancestry.

Waldo.

Nice to meet you. Lamezia Terme also has a shopping center, centro commerciale, complete with an electronis store, a grocery store, and...a McDonald's. It's called Due Mari and it's about a 10-15 minute drive from Nicastro.

If you make it to Falnera Marina stop at Bar Vittoria for outstanding gelato. Closer to Sambiase is a great seafood restaurant called Ristorante L'Oasi .

If you are driving traffic laws here are only suggestions.

Buon viaggio,
