Lake Garda self-catering for 4 adults & 2 children
Please help! I have posted on several sites and the replies are always about how easy it is to find accommodations. I see that hotels are easy, but a self-catering for 4 adults and 2 children is not!
We are flying from the U.S. to Italy to meet our children and grandchildren who are flying from Scotland in July, 2015. We want to vacation at Desenzano, Lake Garda because it appears to offer a vacation that does not require a car. Please correct me if I am wrong. We are looking for a self-catering, 3 bdrm apartment, 2 baths with a pool and view of the lake, but having a very difficult time finding that. Since we won't have a car, we also need to be in walking distance of a grocery store/food market. Any suggestions? Guidance? Thanks so much! Our first trip to Italy so would love some guidance and/or suggestions. Thank you, in advance.

I am in a similar predicament, but three adults and four children. I had no luck with VRBO or any of the other rental sites. I had noticed on Google maps many places called "campground" and ignored them, because I didn't want to camp! But I stumbled upon pictures of one on a booking site -- and they are NOT camping -- at least not what I am used to here in the US.
Some campgrounds are very nice and adult oriented, but most are for families -- and some get very, very family oriented. Waterslides, baby pools, etc. So do a Google search for Lake Garda camping or campgrounds -- you'll find tons of options.
We reserved two mobile homes or caravans for our group at a campground near Gardaland. They each have their own kitchen, two bedrooms, bathrooms. There is a pool onsite, as well as a store and a restaurant, and it's right on the lakeside. Each caravan was about 100euro per night. It's not exactly what I was looking for originally (an apartment or house), but it was the best I could find.

Would you also consider Peschiera del Garda? It has a train station too.

Consider carefully when you rent in either town whether you want to be within walking distance of the train station or the ferry docks. The towns tend to string along the lakeside. There are plenty of taxis but obviously that can start to get expensive if you are taking day trips every day.

Just to clarify, the trains don't connect the lakeside towns. Apart from a car, the only ways to visit are by bus or ferry.
Desenzano is more compact than Peschiera and would be my choice, but I'd rent a car for the lake, especially if you want to get to the northern end.

Yes, my post wasn't clear. What I was trying to convey is that the only two towns with train staions (Peschieira and Desenzano) have lodgings that string along the shoreline. Some lodgings can end up being rather far from the train station or docks if you are playing to use public transporation to visit other locations.
