Lake Garda

If I had to go for 6 days in Lake Garda what is the best town I can stay in with regards to public transport, scenary and day trips, is it Sirmione, Malcesine, Garda or Bardolino. Also how possible is it to visit the Dolomite from Lake Garda, are there some direct buses or may be Tour Agencies that offer these excursions? I need to be somewhere relaxed picturesque with nice scenary and mountain views, but easy to get to other towns using public transport..I will fly into Milan and take train to Desenzano.

You don't tell at which time of the year you will be traveling - which would be crucial to know for answering your question, though.

If you want scenery then stay at the north end---Riva, Malcesine, or Limone. The lake ferries will take you anywhere on the lake. The Dolomites are another story.

from my experience, staying in the middle of the lake [by which I mean half-way up either shore] is easier for visiting the rest of the lake, as it can take all day to get from one end to the other an back leaving very little time actually to sightsee.

whereas if you are staying say, at Garda, you can be in Riva or Sirmone relatively quickly, and well as being able to get to the other side of the lake with ease. Also the bigger places have the express boats stopping there, if you think you would want to cram a lot of touring into your stay.

Do this a bunch walk down hill from the Desanzano train station stay at Hotel Vittorio right on the Lake 100 euro.
Stay flexible easy cheap to ferry to other towns from there. sirmione.com Hotel Eden my fav booking.com Gardone oretty Salo bigger not as pretty the north at Limon Sur Garda not too attractive not as green more mountains hotels dodgier.Best to base at Sirmone ferry out from there.Taxi expensive are lined up at station to rip you off no need to book on line many scammers. booking.com venere.com
for hotel reviews. Usually stay flexible for best experience there.North not as pretty good wind surfing but industrial.
Much colder in shoulder seasons.

In September, the most important thing is to avoid Sirmione and Riva - both still overrun and definitely not enjoyable at that time of the year. I think Ann gave you the best advice: the east shore is less spectacular as far as landscape, so staying on the east shore provides the better views (to the rugged west shore, that is). Other than Garda, also Bardolino (the next village) is worth considering; personally, I like Bardolino, which has two rare churches from the early Middle Ages, plenty of supermarket quality wine and some truly excellent wine.

I will be staying in Peschiera Del Garda, just booked everything. Do you have any idea how can I do a day trip to the Dolomite Surroundings, or whether there are some private tours?

If you are staying in a hotel ask them - there are nearly always tour companies offering a day trip into the Dolomites. If your hotel doesn't offer this or you are staying in an apartment just look for a local travel agency and ask them. Using a coach (bus) trip has the advantage that you are seated much higher up and get a better view. When I did this I went to Val Gardena for the day about 8.30 - 18.00.
