I am looking for a very romantic an relaxing hotel on Lake Como to spend a few days in September. Although I would dearly love to stay at Villa d'Este, I can't quite afford $400/night. My limit is probably about $250 a night. Any suggestions would be VERY much appreciated. If possible, please e-mail me directly at: kevinlyman@attbi.com.
Thanks in advance!
Kevin

Try the Regina Olga, while not plush (I am used to 5 star hotels) its location is great. Right on the lake and walking distance to the Villa d'Este. It is basic but nice. Have dinner at the Villa d'Este, very elegant and great service. Also try the Grand Hotel Tremezzo. It is a Concorde Hotel. It was sold out when i was there but I went to see it and it is quite beautiful. Good Luck!
From a thread with a lot of suggestiopns from last fall...

(note from Rex -- very similar sounding names: Grand Hotel Menaggio and Grand Hotel Victoria Menaggio)
And last of all, search "Belvedere" or look for posts on Hotel du Lac in Bellagio. they both get very favorable comments here.
Best wishes,
Rex
Just returned from 3 weeks in Italy & France and stayed 3 nights in Bellagio at the Villa Serbelloni Grand Hotel which was beautiful, but a bit tired at 335 Euros. We checked out the Hotel Florence right next door which is beautiful with lake view rooms with balconies for $195/night. Also across the lake in Menaggio, we looked at the Grand Hotel Victoria, a 4 star hotel at about $275 also quite nice. The Grand Hotel Tremezzo seemed very nice and was also booked during our stay. We had lunch at Villa d'Este, highly recommended even if you don't stay at the hotel...definately worth the price.
Be sure to visit Villa del Balbianello & Villa Carlotta. Lake Como was wonderful!

A very nice hotel directly in the city of Como on the main lakefront square is the Barchetta Excelsior. Nice rooms and excellent breakfast service. It should easily fit your budget. It is extremely convenient to the lake ferries for access to other points on the lake. It is also very convenient for evening strolls around the main eating/shopping area of Como. I like this hotel a lot.
Hi, Just came back from Lake Como. We stayed at the Hotel Gotthard in Weggis. This is a wonderful family-owned hotel. Very clean and the owners very friendly and helpful. The price was $150 USD per night including buffet breakfast and a wonderful four course dinner. The ferry is about a half-block away. Weggis is a small, quiet, quaint town. Mt. Rigi is directly behind the town with a gondola ride up the mountain. They did have a casino but we never went. Can't believe they had a casino, it just seemed out of character. Happy Traveling!
Two items to give: (1) To Carole, who believes Weggis is on Lake Como, please go look at your map. It's on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland. (2) to Kevin, I can suggest a romantic, pleasant hotel on the shore with great balconies overlooking the lake (como)---Albergo Milano in Varenna, a lovely charming village along the lake shore. And it will be well below your budget.
Have a look at the Grand Hotel Imperiale at Moltrasio which is the next town on the lake north of Cernobbio. You can check it out under www.bestwestern.it and then searching under Como. The quality is not Villa d'Este but what you save, also on your budgeted figure, will enable you to splash out more on a dinner at Villa d'Este (go for the Sporting Grill not the main restaurant) or alternatively the restaurant Il Gatto Nero above Cernobbio - decent food but the view is to kill for.
I live on the como's lake and I have a motorboat on it. In my opinion the best place to stay on the lake is Varenna and hotel du lac in Varenna is the most charming hotel on the lake. Another place 1, hours drive from there is bagni di bormio that is the most charming place in northen Italy

Why can't we just stay on your boat? That sounds like more fun. Ah, la dolce vita eh?
Wayne, Thanks for calling that to my attention. I was starting to say that we just came back from Lake Como and Lake Lucerne but omitted the second part. Yes, you are right Weggis is on Lake Lucerne.
Wayne, me again. I think I should have gone to bed a while ago. My brain is not working. Kevin was looking for a hotel on Lake Como and I was giving him advice on Lake Lucerne. I think I will quit while I am ahead - but wait, I don't think I am ahead. Oh well, good night all.
We like the Albergo fioroni, in Urio Carate. It`s not too far south of the Villa Carlotta. It is a small family run hotel, right on the lake. All the rooms have balconies with a view of Lake Como. They have good food, too. They have a web site. You can drive down the see the Villa de Este. We had coffee there one year, but the next year, they said no, unless we were guests.
