Lake Como
I am so disappointed. I have been planning for weeks and was ready to purchase my airline tickets, and pay for the apartment in Cernobbio today. We had planned to visit many of towns around the lake, travel to Switzerland for a day or two and also attend the F1 race in Monza.
Late last night I read several articles (nothing has been reported in the U.S. on this) that Switzerland has closed it border with Italy and hundreds of migrants have erected tents and flimsy dwellings at the train station in Como. They are waiting to pay smugglers to get them into Switzerland. I know there are migrants all over Europe, but for me to have to use this train station daily to get to other points on the Lake, Monza and Switzerland has me thinking that perhaps I should postpone this trip to another time.
I know others will have opinions on this and I am very willing to listen.
Thank you.

Oh, the Daily Mail and the Sun...
The articles say that the makeshift camp is AT the railway station, not IN the station. And if it bothers you that much, according to Rome2Rio you can take a bus from Como to Monza, although if I were going to do it three days running I would stay somewhere closer in the first place.

There are several web stories. Just Google. FYI, despite what's reported, Clooney's house isn't anywhere near the Como train station(s).

camelotdb, it sounds like you won't have a car. If your trip isn't until September (F1 in Monza), then it's possible this issue could be resolved. Certainly, the Swiss border wouldn't still be completely "closed." If you'd still be nervous about the Como train station(s), consider getting an apartment in or close to Menaggio where there is direct bus service to Lugano. Or you could stay in Varenna where you can train to Monza without going through Como. Whichever town, you need to know the departure time of the last ferry in each direction between the two so that you don't get stuck on the wrong side of the lake coming back from either Lugano or Monza. You can also train from Varenna to St. Moritz.

Jean,
Thank you for your gentle, kind helpfulness. My airline ticket is on hold for another 5 hours (using points). As mentioned, I was disappointed and before I started researching other options (because I am at work) My first thought was to go to this forum. I knew I could count on this forum to help me sort this out. I think I will go ahead and confirm my tickets, and I will have time to look for another apartment in Varenna. I can't thank you enough for offering these options to me. I actually found the apartment in Cernobbio from this site. So if others have a recommendation, I would certainly appreciate it. I would prefer to keep it under $200 per night.
Prego!

Hi
You are not te one who is going to be disturbed by the migrants.
Migrants just want to escape violence or starvation and in their immense majority are behaving extremely correctly.
Actually I found myself in a train full of migrants last year and only discovered that fact about 10 min from arrival when police officers told them to disembark earlier because there was a red cross team.
Migrants are not what D Trump tries to make believe, they don't eat us alive, they don't rape, they don't bite.
So again, no prob for you, unless you are a very bad person and seeing others in distress patiently waiting is too much for you, but it doesn't seem the case !
So enjoy your holiday.

I saw many in Germany and France last fall. I was captured by how and what they had with them. Beautiful rugs rolled tight, suitcases ducted taped together, just the feeling they escaped with what they could carry. Families young and old. Don't be afraid of them. I would go. Monza would be very pricey with the race. There are some kind people on here. Just ignore snarky comments. Sounds like a good trip and yes, I read about this yesterday when reading the UK news.
