La Calcina/Venice...has everyone had to pay a deposit by personal check?

I was booking a room for June '07 for 4 nights and they want a deposit by check equivalent for 3 nights.
As much as I want to stay there I don't really want to have to send a personal check for that amount. Has everyone done this?

I've not done it at La calcina but have at other hotels. They normally hold the check and return it to you when you check out. If you cancel within the time frame allowed they return it, if you cancel after that they can cash it.

Yes. We did it last year. No problema. Loved the hotel. We stayed three nights.

Tom - If I can't trust you??!! ;-) My notes include trying the drink you recommended - Sgroppino. Will toast you with it!

My first sgroppino was at La Calcina (you never forget your first). My only surprise about your check deal is that our deposit was only for one night of a three night stay. Maybe their policy has changed. I don't remember if they cashed it right away or not.

The hotel is first rate. Be sure to book some time on the roof top deck for wine and cheese. The restaurant food was "ok", but it is nice to sit out on the deck on the canal. Have fun planning.

I have stayed at La Calcina on my last several visits to Venice...and each time I had to send a personal check for a deposit. The amount of the deposit did vary depending on high and low season (3 nights for high and 1 night for low, I believe). They will then deduct this from your bill at the end of your stay. I have never had a problem with them and the one time I had to cancel (within their cancellation policy) I did receive a check back from them. Even my friends in Venice find their deposit policy strict, but admittedly everyone thinks very highly of them and prefers to stay with them anyway! And you will love your first (and possibly sequential) sgroppino(s)...Enjoy La Calcina, they are a top-flight crew.

Yes. We stayed at La Calcina in early April and they asked for a personal check for a deposit. As I recall it was for around $200 and it was applied to our bill. We loved LC and will stay there again. Great staff, lovely room, location excellent, and the breakfast will not disappoint. They will not confirm your reservation fully until they receive the check. It took 7-10 days to get there (from Atlanta) and postage was .80.

Can you do a bank transfer (in this case, from a UK bank)? We haven't written a "hard copy" check for years...all our banking is done online. I don't think we even have any checks!

Yep, for one night, based on a three-night stay in late October a few years ago. Was it a hassle at the time? Yes. Would I do it again to stay there? Absolutely!
