La Calcina Venice - Non-View Room; distance to Campo Santa Margherita

I am considering a non-view room at La Calcina in Venice. Can anyone who has stayed in one comment on these rooms - e.g. are they smaller, darker than the rooms with a water view, etc.

Also, I hear Campo Santa Margherita is very nice. Would this be a long walk in the evening from this hotel? I will be in Venice in May.

Thank you.

They are not really any different than any other hotel room at La Calcina except for no water view. I don't recall them being particularly dark.

Nothing is a very long walk from anywhere in Venice and Campo Santa Margherita is lovely and a great place to go for dinner outside and not far at all from La Calcina -- but you'll probably get lost, which is part of the fun.

Hi Kennedy,

There are many places in Italy where it's nice to have a room with a great view. IMO Venice isn't one of them. Unless you have a view of the grand canal, all the other "water" views are really just of other buildings, those side canals are narrow!

In Venice, you are not going to want to spend a lot of time in your room. You are going to be out wandering, soaking up the wonderful atmosphere, getting lost, making discoveries. All those views are free! If there is a spot that particularly appeals to you, just sit and enjoy. It won't be what you would have seen from a hotel window anyway.

Buon viaggio!

Ditto the comment about getting lost-we did from Campo SM and I thought we wouldn't ever fine our way back to LaCalcina-take note of the route you use. LaCalcina has a rooftop terrace that you can reserve for an hour or so-great views from there.

I can name numerous fun hotels in Venice where this is simply not true, and La Calcina is one of them. La Calcina faces the Giudecca Canal, which is much larger than the Grand. Its eastern view is particularly lovely.

The non-view rooms (if you get a window) are lighter than most. La Calcina has a unique spot on the edge of the Giudecca and the canal Rio Vio.

One could argue a view will not particularly enhance a short visit to Venice. If you're not traveling in winter, chances are, you'll be out and about most of the day. La Calcina has that lovely deck, too, and there are comfortable benches along the Zattere. In La Calcina's magical location, you really don't need a room a with a view. If you were booked for a three-week stay, I'd have a different opinion.

Campo Santa Margherita is an easy walk.

I've stayed at La Calcina twice. Once solo in a non-view single room & once with a friend in a corner double with a view of the Guidecca. Yes the canal view room was significantly bigger and had more light. But both were VERY nice and I was totally comfortable and highly recommend this hotel.

I've stayed in both a Giudecca Canal-facing room and a side room with a partial canal view. Loved them both. We like to keep our windows open at night, so the drawback of the canal-facing room was that it was quite noisy (lots of boat traffic!). As others have mentioned, with the canal-side deck restaurant and the rooftop sundeck that you can reserve private time at, I don't think you'll miss the canal view. It's a lovely place to stay.

Yes, the water views from La Calcina are really water views. We picked a non-view room hoping it would be quieter at night. I don't know if it was significantly quieter, but we slept well.

The Giudeca Canal is busy just about all day. We loved watching all the activity from the lobby, the breakfast room and outside. One rainy night, we had a very nice dinner in the hotel's restaurant.
