Based on all the positive reviews here and on tripadvisor I tried to reserve a room at La Calcina in Venice for my trip in Sept. After several confusing email exchanges and one phone call, it seems that they only have a partial view room on the fourth floor available.

At 164 euros this is definitely at the top of our budget, but I'm just not seeing many budget options that I like in Venice, it will be our last two nights in Italy, and the pictures look so beautiful online that I'm thinking it might be worth the splurge.

But maybe a partial view room will not be that nice...I've seen one post on some non-view rooms being rather dark. Any opinions from La Calcina lovers out there?

P.S. I emailed La Calcina to find out what room # it is but they haven't responded yet, so all I know is fourth floor double roome w/partial view.

I stayed in a partial view room WITH a terrace last summer -- I wasn't expecting much a view from the description, but we still had a nice view of the Guidecca canal!! I think it was room 38. The room was nice and bright being on the 3rd or 4th floor (can't remember, sorry! but the room number seems to indicate the 3rd floor.)

We spent some time every afternoon on the rooftop terrace which you can reserve for 2 hours at a time. I REALLY enjoyed this hotel.

Awbaker - yes I have read good things on here about room #38 so I actually requested it but they said it was booked Anyone stayed in another room at La Calcina and like/didn't like it?

Okay, La Calcina just emailed to tell me that I have room #42....has anyone stayed in this room? Or does anyone want to comment even if you haven't stayed in this room? Anyone? Thanks!

Sorry don't know the room but love that hotel. I stayed solo in a single non-view once, and with a friend in a double canal view another time. Both were lovely rooms. My non-view did not have a terrace but rather looked out over a narrow canal and into another aparment building (but it was actually quite pretty anyway with beautiful draperies and shutters, and looking into a very "Italian" living room next door. Dark and quiet with nice furnishings and fabrics.

The location on the Dosoduro is extremely easy to get to from the train station by vaporetto, a bit out of the way in a quiet neighborhood but still close enough to San Marcos (~10 mins. walk).

It's the only place I have stayed in Venice so can't compare to other hotels. The hotel IS as beautiful as the pictures show. The included breakfast is a nice touch too. The front desk was efficient and helpful to me. Both stays were a number of years ago now, before the hotel was quite as popular as it (deservedly) is now.

Thanks for the response Suze. I guess I will just go for it unless we hit any unexpected budget snafus (sp?), the hotel looks nice and so many good reviews couldn't be wrong (I hope!).

I think you'll be happy with the hotel. I was surprised how close it was to the Accademia bridge.

It might have been me that wrote that my non-view room was dark. We had to switch rooms on our last night because we had changed our itinerary and room #38 wasn't available for us for the last night. But our 2nd room was on the 2nd floor which is why it was so dark -- the 4th floor shouldn't be dark.

Suze, I completely agree regarding the beauty of the hotel. I even remember commenting to the wonderful desk attendants that the photos on their website were the most accurate I have ever seen. Usually the website photos of hotels look better than the reality, but not at La Calcina.

By the way, My husband and I just recently stayed there this past September, in a 4th floor double canalview room. You are in for a treat no matter what the view from your room because the location, cleanliness, and service are the best.
