We drove from Krakow to Budapest in Sept. 03 but did so over several days, stopping in Zakopane, Presov and Kosice-- so our experience may not be helpful.

I assume you are driving directly from Krakow to Budapest. I can tell you that the roads we traveled were well maintained and well marked as to rte. no., next town, etc. Except for toll roads in Hungary, most roads were single lane each direction. The road we took through the Tatras was not what you might envision--there were no cliff hanging roads with missing guardrails. Basically, it was just a curvy road through evergreen forest.

Feel free to ask any questions that our experience might apply to.

The roads were as dcdee said, winding, green, dull.

wondering if it would be possible/advisable to do the trip from Budapest to Krakow in one day?

I am thinking of taking a motorhome from Salzburg to Prague then Prague to Vienna then Vienna to Budapest then Budapest to Krakow. I intend to take 8 to 10 days to get from Salzburg to Krakow stopping at the destinations above.
Any ideas or thoughts regarding this route and these destinations would be much appreciated.

I'd suggest a little reading on Eger, Hungary. It's an interesting destination and close to your route.

Several years ago we drove from Budapest to Krakow. It was a very nice drive, especially going over the Tatras in slovakia. We stopped at the Grand Hotel in Smokovec. We walked down to the Koliba restaurant and had a very good time. The restaaurant had traditional music and the food and wine were very good. Next day we left for Krakow. Check out fodor's eastern and Central Europe guide for more information. It was a good guide to use there. On the return, we don't remember where we stayed, but it was in the Tatras, and it was an inn in the ski country. I don't know how much time you have but, I believe we crossed into Slovakia from Gyor. It was a great vacation.
