Krakow-private car and driver for out of town tours

I have very limited time in Krakow and am looking for a car/driver/guide who can get me to the salt mines and Auschwitz in the same day. I am concerned about safety so I'd probably go with a licensed guide thinking the car would have insurance, etc. The only tour I've found is extremely expensive and above budget. Any info would be helpful.

I have been researching this and have found that most of the tours with private drivers are a little expensive. But I don't know what you consider expensive.
For example. The tour with private driver to Auschwitz would be about 270zl which would be about $90.
Did you consider joining a tour company? You wouldn't be the only person but you can do both tours in the company of other people starting at 85zl for both.

We are choosing not to take an organized tour to Auschwitz as the time is limited to two hours and we may find we would want to spend more time there. But if you are trying to do both tours in the same day your time would be more limited.

Last year we used Andrew Durman and he was excellent. I believe his fee for a combo of Auschwitz and the Salt Mines is around 690PL. His website is www.tour-services.pl.

I'm sorry. I should have typed the fee as 390zl.

The Salt Mine and Auschwitz is a lot to do in one day. I didn't go to Auschwitz but did see the Salt Mine. Once inside you may be there for several hours, depending on how many people are touring the mine at the time. You must take a guided tour and sometimes need to wait to enter rooms and need to wait for the elevator to exit as the elevator only takes 36 people at a time (although it is a fast elevator). We probably waited about 20 minutes for the elevator to exit and were inside the mine 3+ hours plus the time to get there.

Here's the correct URL for the site jrjcollins mentions:

We also used Andrew Durman and found him to be excellent. He provided wonderful insight into the area and into growing up behind the Iron Curtain. We only did Auschwitz; and if I recall the cost was about $100. He picked us up at 7:00; got us there at 8:00; but we actually did not finish our tour (we walked the grounds ourselves; did not do a formal tour) until almost 1:00 and did not get back to Krakow until after 2:00 (we found Auschwitz fascinating; and remember that there are two locations to visit; Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II). Another day we took bus to the salt mines; and if I recall that was about a two hour tour. Trying to do both in one day is probably doable; but it is a lot. I'm going to assume the drive from Auschwitz to Salt mines is greater than one hour.

I wouldn't say that visit in Auschwitz and Salt Mines is too much for a one day. Even during winter when opening hours both in Auschwitz as well as Salt Mine are shortened, there is no problem to have 1 - 2 hours break for a lunch between tours. Obviously, is necessary to leave Krakow quite early: 8 - 9 AM and take a private car or minivan instead of public transport.
It's also worth to notice that taking Auschwitz and Salt Mine tour in one day is about 20% cheaper than the same tours taken separately. For more details about private tours take a look at: www.krk-krakowtours.com

Autumn is much more appropriate time to do a trip to Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka Salt Mine, not only because this is off season time. Low temperatures that makes you can easier imagine and feel what kind of horrible conditions prisoners had to cope with. The temperature in the Salt Mine is approx. 14°C all year. I and my family visited Auschwitz and Salt Mine in one day using offer form http://www.krakow-tour.pl/auschwitz-...-one-day-tour/.
