Krakow - anyone been there? Looking ahead
A friend who just went on a trip to Switzerland with me, is of Polish descent. I have mentioned she might like to visit Poland. Although it is not one of my priorities, I am willing to go with her, maybe combining it with a return trip (for me) to beautiful Prague. (overnight train or flight). She said, "What do you do in Krakow." I have not even begun to research other than checking out flight and hotel costs, but anyone have any positive or negative comments to help us decide if we should take hard earned money and vacation time and go?

Here is my trip report from last year. Go to Day 8 through 12. We loved Kraków!

Krakow suffered almost no damage during World War II other than neglect. In recent years a great deal of fixing-up has taken place. You will love its baroque architecture, cleanliness, and vistas along the river. Be sure to spend time at Wawel Castle.

I have been three times, always at the end of a business trip to Warsaw, and its one of my favorite smaller cities in Europe. As USNR wrote, it was spared major damage, so is its architecture is relatively secure.
Two worthwhile day trips are Auschwitz and the salt mines.
I would prefer a first visit to Krakow than a second to Prague (and I have been to Prague twice).

I loved Krakow and Vienna. I agree, the 2 combined would be a fabulous trip. I can't remember if we spent 4 or 5 nights in Krakow, but whatever it was, it wasn't enough. I went in the dead of winter, so I am looking forward to when I have a chance to return in nicer weather. Auschwitz was very moving, and I told my mom I wanted to get married in the salt mines.

Krakow is wonderful to spend a nice time of relax! Everyone can find there something for himself - if you like visiting there are lots of monuments, if you like to party - the nightlife is one of the best in Europe, if you like just lay in a bad and relax - there are many nice apartaments waiting for you. I live in Krakow, so if you have any further questions feel free to contact me
Prices in Krakow are not too high. I would recommend you a nice hostel just 5 mins walking distance from the Old Town and city centre - it's called Aston Hostel and is really nice to spend some time in it and not pay too much.

Krakow is indeed lovely; I could have happily stayed longer than the four days that I had:

I am convinced! Will be planning Krakow and Vienna for Sept or Oct 2010. What is a good split? I was thinking 2 days Krakow and 4 Vienna. Less hassle to fly or train between the two?

only 2 days for Krakow? - oh, it's so little time. I'm not convinced if you manage to see everything or to feel the atmosphere of the city. Even one day more -still not enough but definitely better than two days.
plane or train? It all depends on your money and schedule - I think that you just have to compare it
