Krakow
Krakow: The Hotel Saski is a great find. Great price, etc. Try to get room away from street.
Restaurant: Pod Aniolami is good for grilled, light food (rare find). Also, Wierzynek (spelling?) is great - view especially. All reasonable. Also, if you do not eat meat, stick to Trout or Salmon. The other fish on menus is not good. Meat: I loved the veal and chicken dishes.
Sights: Guidebooks are fine.

I agree, Hotel Saski is good choice. A short walk from train or bus station. At edge of Old Town/City Center. Attached restaurant is very good. Grand Hotel next door is great but expensive. Find the Mexican Restaurant. Take train or bus from Prague to Krakow. Bus is safest. Hire car and driver to visit Auschwitz. Take local bus to Salt Mine.

agree on the Mexican resturant. It is amazing that you fly thousands of miles away and find a good Mexican resturant in Central Europe. It is downstairs. I ate their twice in 3 days and met up with some English blokes who thought it was also great. I stayed in the Hotel Polonia and it was cheap, clean and big room. Right outside the gates to old town. Was once a grand Hotel. The people were nice and the driver the hotel had was a great older polish man who lived in Chicago for 2 years with his sister. Krakow is my favortie city and wich I could go back. Hope to soon.

I spent 2 weeks in Kracow for an artistic project I'm working on and the Hotel Polonia gave me a great rate for a single room . I had asked for a quiet room and it was perfect. The staff made me feel like I was living with family. I always felt safe and the walk into Old Town was so nice, thru a pretty park. I needed to hire a driver for 5 to 8 days and the hotel made arrangements for one of their staff to be my driver. His English is very good and this man is a walking history book!
And he is a safe driver and was very courteous on all the trips. His name is Roman and the best independent tour guide I have ever had. So my two weeks at the Hotel Polonia and Krakow, on scale of 1-100 was a 150! I did see some comments about the restaurant at the hotel but I never ate breakfast but ate many dinners there in that two weeks and thought the food was very good but I grew up on that kind of food so I am probably biased. Hope your experience in Krakow will be as fanatastic as mine was. I will definitely be returning.

Returned recently to Sydney -spent 3 nights at the Saski Hotel (2 adults and 3 kids)-excellent location, good breakfast arrangement with the restaurant adjoining BUT agree you should ask for a room not facing the street-we asked to change after the first night. Eat at Hawelka at the main square -superb food-downstairs is more relaed/casul upstairs more a special occasion dress

May want to look into renting apt. short term, which not only are cheaper then many of the 2star hotels - but also in addition to kitchens where you can cook your own tea or coffee - include washing machines in some appartments so you can do you own laundry. Apartments definitly cut your cost down.
here is one of few recommanded places you can check out:

also stayed at polonia.. just across from train station and park.
had great food and ambiance at a restaurant which in polish meant "the peasant's house" or similar. really really fun place.
also went to have dinner at a renovated palatial home with harp music outside the town a bit. will try to find the name of that, but it was gorgeous.
enjoyed polish theater.. felt the acotrs were great and even got a feel for what they were talking about.
i would not stay far away from the old town. it is so convenient.
did not have a bad meal the entire time. but have to admit we were mot tempted to try the breakfast at the polonia.. we had a price without breakfast anyway and tried a different place everyday.
one suggestion: the day you go to the salt mines.. don't plan much else.
i found going down the hundreds of steps very very stressful.. in general, and also on my feet and toes. we were totally exhausted that night. but it defintely is worth it.
we spent a lot of time in the jewish quarter..
a beautiful town with a lot to offer.
great view from the japanese cultural center on other side of river. they also have activities there.
we bought a travel card at tourist office that also gave us entrance to many museums the week we were there. our hotel staff knew nothing about those things.
don't know if they still have that plan.
enjoy!!
p.s. we went to krakow by train from vienna.. not any spectacular trip, but it worked out well for us with that particluar vacation.
