My rental apartment says it has •FREE high speed Internet access; Wi-Fi or Ethernet . I want to bring only a Kindle. What do I also need to bring with me to be sure I can access e-mail and Internet?

I don't follow..if your kindle can access wifi all you need is the password for the wifi when you arrive and your charger...
The agent, book of info in apt or perhaps a notice by the modem in the apt. will give you the password to access WiFi like any hotel.
Assuming your kindle does that now (Internet and email) and you know how to access them via wifi now, nothing is different. Just set up the wifi network, enter password and you should have the exact same capabilities as you do at home.
However to be on the safe side set it up as a public network connection, rather than a private one. You should be asked this when you first try to connect.
Since you will not have a computer ( I am guessing) you will need a charger that works independently and also an electrical adapter for the French plug.
Why a public connection?
