I have actually stayed at both and I know that you would be comfortable at either. Killiecrankie is a bit pricier but the food and the surroundings are lovely. Knochendarroch is much more convenient for Pitlochry and is in lovely grounds as well.

Thank you. That's pretty much what I thought. I'm sure I won't go wrong regardless of which I choose. Nice to have that option.

I've stayed at Killiecrankie a couple of times and LOVED it. Can't comment on Knochendarroch - it is probably very nice, but Pitlochry isn't my fave place in Scotland.

I've stayed in Knockendarroch (nb sp)at a conference. Whilst nice, its a bit samey.

Killiecrankie is super. I've seen it whilst walking nearby. Great reviews.

I agree about Pitlochry- although it's improving. For me, money being no object, It's a no brainer.

Thanks janisj, I also suspected as much but at this point any opinions are welcomed. I realize that several of the Scottish experts have a less than favorable view of Pitlochry, but I've never been and for this trip it makes a convenient stop ( traveling by rail) between Plockton and Edinburgh.

Pitlochry seems to gain much of its disfavor from being "too touristy". Since I'm expecting that and since we will have spent the previous 6/7 days in out of way places such as Rannoch Moor and Skye, I think a bit of 'touristy' might be okay.
It's only for two nights arriving late, full day then departure the next morning. Plan to spend most of the time doing walks.

I am leaning towards Killiecrankie since it is a bit further from town.
