Kilkenny or Waterford

I am leaving for Ireland in 1 week and a friend just told me now not to miss Kilkenny. She loved it. Can anyone offer any information on this town and any bed and breakfasts that are wonderful? If you had to choose btwn 1 night and Kilkenny or 1 night in Waterford what would you pick?

FYI..In Waterford I am staying at the Foxmount. Any feedback would be great!

thanks!

I've been to Kilkenny twice and I loved it as well. Very cute town, easy to walk around, plenty of things to do. We drove in/around Waterford but didn't stay there...so maybe there are parts that are as charming as Kilkenny but we didn't see them. Sorry, I can't offer any info on B&Bs. Have a great trip!

Kilkenny for sure. There's the nice little town and the Kilkenny Design Center with wonderful artisan shops. We stayed near to Kilkenny, not in it, at a B&B called Inishlounaght House, but that was a long time ago so a very vague recommendation.

Jen,
re B&Bs check out www.ireland.travel.ie
When in Kilkenny be sure and visit the Castle, the Design Centre and the Caves outside the town as well. Some other places in the region to consider visiting are Mount Juliet Estate - now a golf club and hotel and beside it Jerpoint Abbey (wonderful glass/crystal). Have a good time,

I recently visited Ireland...and we eastward along the south of Ireland. After visiting Cobh, for a mulitmedia experience about the Irish Immigration experience (the sailing ships of the 1800's left for North America from Cobh) we made for Waterford. This coastal city was originally a Viking settlement...when they left...it became a Norman stronghold and switched its Name to Waterford instead of the 'fiord' used by the Vikings. We stayed at the Granville Hotel right on the Quay. Very nice hotel, with a wonderful dining experience. The town is appreciably larger than Kilkenny. Also nearby is the famed Waterford Crystal Factory which offers a very nice tour. The side streets off the Quay in Waterford might be 900 years old. The town was quaint in its way...not at all modern and yet not old either.

Kilkenny is a smaller town graced by the marvelous Kilkenny Castle. We took the Castle Tour and I also visited the art center across the street from the Castle entreway. There is a nice restaurant in the design & art center or you can cruise the town for more atmosphere like pubs...I even saw a Chinese restaurant. If you are determined to spend the night in one or the other...I would recommend spending the night in Waterford, the doing the Kilkenny Castle the following day...and from Kilkenny you are perfectly placed to drive to NE Dublin or due east to Wicklowe County.

Definately recommend Waterford, you can see the crystal factory and there is a really pretty fishing village nearby called Dunmore East. As far as accomodation si concerned we stayed in a Lovely Bed and Breakfast on the Cork Road, just 5 minutes outside the city centre. Enjoy yourselves!

Kilkenny's a lot of fun. And there's an excellent Indian restaurant just off the main road. It was right next to our B&B, but I can't remember the name of either. There's a B&B booking agency on the main street through town.
