I started a trip report at Slow Traveler. Since it will be quite long, I probably won't post here.
If there are any questions,I would be glad to reply.

Ira, that is so funny. Two publications on one's resume. Love it. Be that as it may, jabez, I'll be looking for your report at ST or here, wherever. I'm one of those who enjoy reading long trip reports and regret that I cannot seem to develop the habit of keeping a detailed travel journal. My travel memorabilia (sp?) is such a mess that I cannot remember which nooks and crannies I saw on which trips. Well no matter, at least I remember the moments. J.

I would post my report here, but it's a real hassle with a long one. This site (unless it's changed) only accepts so much info at a time.
Umbria is WONDERFUL! It's beautiful, has great towns and has some of the most dramatic scenery in all of Italy. My report goes into more detail.
Coming from the sea there are probably many beautiful rides. If someone has a Michelin map (with good detail),they shade scenic routes in green. I foud them very accurate. If you have time, drive from Florence to Monalcino. If yiu can,the route (not main road)from Siena to Buonconvento is remarkable. You can stop at Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore. You can return by a faster main route (N3?-don't have a map handy) that also has some nice views.

I am planning a trip to Como, Florence, Portifino, Siena, Perugia and then Rome for 2 weeks....Could you tell me if you would prefer to stay in Siena at the Grand Continental (new hotel) or out in San Felice at Borgo San Felice....I have heard good about both and can't decide. Also, have you been to the Brufani Palace in Perugia? THinking about staying there as well. Thanks
