I was on such a shoestring budget in the mid-80's I didn't DARE go to Santorini. So, no. But I remember Paros in the mid-80's and, boy, has it changed. I remember taking a bus to the end of the road in 1984 which at the time went as far as Piso Livadi. After a few days of being eaten alive by sand fleas, I splurged -- $10 for a really nice hotel. There was a hill overlooking Piso Livadi and Naxos which had nothing on it but a taverna at the top. Had a great stay. 15 years later on a trip to Paros, feeling nostalgic, I went back to Piso Livadi. The hill was completely covered with houses and the taverna was gone. Still, in spite of rather more development than some of the other islands, Paros has managed to keep its character.

You could have stayed in Oia for as little as the equivalent of $5-10/night back then depending on the location, and the youth hostels were even cheaper (I think about $3). I rented a house for $300/month in 1985 and for $150/month in 1987. Stayed for 6 months both times.
I went to Piso Livadi last June. I think that might have been the hill I went up on my motorscooter. It was my first visit to Paros. I really enjoyed it and will return someday.

I also didn't make it to Santorini in the 80s but, I did go in the mid 90s, I rented a little house on the north end near the windmill. It was very residential then. I can still always find it though because it's the only orange colored one in that area.
I do remember Ornos Beach on Mykonos in the mid 80s. much different than what it is now! Every time I go back I'm amazed!
