June or September, when is the best time to visit Amsterdam?

My partner and I enjoy both outdoor and indoor activities when visiting cities. June or September hopefully will be pleasently cool and not too crowded. Any suggestions concerning what time of the year is best for a visit?

The problem with September is to be conscious of the huge convention(s), espec. the IBC, that occur roughly between Sept 6-15 (give or take a day of one end or the other). Rooms go very fast, or prices go very very high.

Travelnut, thanks for the note of caution. Do you know what the weather is like in June? I live in the heat and would enjoy temperatures in the low 70's.

I just go to both www.weather.com and www.wunderground.com and find the historical data... then I pack for temps a little up and a little down (in other words, "layers&quot...

If you're from Miami, Amsterdam will certainly be cool in June by comparison.
We went in April and mostly wore jeans, l/s tees or light sweaters, and a very light jacket. Some afternoons we took off the jacket for most of the day. September might be a very few degrees cooler on average, but there is no telling what might happen during your actual trip. Either month will be much milder than the cold of Jan/Feb.

I meant September might be ever so slightly cooler than June, not April..

June can be cool and wet, like this year or hot and humid like last year. Long days, it doesn't get dark until after 10pm and is light very early. September tends to have the more settled weather, warm, less humid, shorter days, but it can be cool and wet too. There is no way of knowing what weather you will get. The IBC dates for next year are 11-16 September.

If you don't mind the shorter hours of daylight I would suggest the second half of September or even early October.

Thanks for your many responses. Which month will have less tourists/crowds?

It is always pretty crowded, but in September you won't have so many school trips adding to the mix. They will only just be back at school, and trips tend to be done in May/June. I think June is probably the more popular month. April/May is to be avoided unless you want the bulb fields as well.

We went in May. Great. Could you handle that?
