Jamikins and BikerScott Hit Rome for New Year's 2011/2012
Hello lovely fodorites!
It is that time again - time for our annual new years vacation and this year has us drinking and eating in Rome!
Now we have been to Rome before:
Once at the end of our 3.5 week honeymoon in 2003. We were tired and ready to head home and booked a B&B at Rei di Roma metro station - not ideal for walking and eating out at night! It was also Bikerscott's first time to Europe and let's just say that Rome was a bit 'intense' for him!
Second time was in 2007 when we spent a week in an apartment at Campo di Fiori with my parents, my brother, and Scott's parents. Never ever do this. Just dont. It was so stressful trying to make everyone happy that we didnt really enjoy Rome at all!
So when discussing where to go this year we decided to give Rome another chance and we hope to fall in love with it. We are trying to rectify all the mistakes of previous trips!
First, we have rented a lovely flat in Trastevere where we are hopefully surrounded by yummy food, and walking distance to sites: http://www.liveromelikearoman.com/index.htm
Second, we have a list of wine bars and deli places to pick up supplies for our week.
Thirdly, we have no agenda other than to eat great food, drink great wine and take photos. We have been to all the usual sites so only have reservations at Borghese Gallery and a local restaurant for New Year's Eve.
We would love to hear about any great restaurants or beloved places to buy food etc so please let us know if you have a favourite.
We head out Boxing Day - looking forward to sharing our travel journal and photos as we go!

Do you know the Via Ripetta which runs up to Piazza di Popolo? There is an excellent winebar, Buccone at no.19. We found it on our way to La Buca, ate lunch there instead and returned a few days later to eat exactly the same thing again.
Our other food find was L'Asino d'Oro, recently moved to Via del Boschetto 73, off Via Nazionale. A fixed lunch is 12 euro and the day we went consisted of four not huge but delicious courses, wine and a bottle of water. Pudding and coffee are extra. Highly recommended.
My son, who has recently moved to Rome, complained yesterday that the temperature was only 10 degrees. Have a good time.

I cannot recommend this cafe/wine bar/restaurant enough - especially for your (non) "agenda":

Great spot for anything: coffee, snacks, drinks, or full meal. The food/wine is to die for and it's conveniently located in an area you are likely to be passing through at some point in your stay (mid-way between Piazza Navona and the Vatican, on charming Via dei Coronari). It almost demands lingering.

jose0 - we are going 26 Dec but always post a live trip report with photos - so I am just starting that thread and we will add to this as we go!

Best restaurant( and not expensive) : "Il Brillo Parlante"
It has a very central location near Piazza del Popolo, and it has great food !!
On the ground floor there is a gourmet Shop, in the basement the restaurant.
Do not leave without trying the Tiramisu !!!! It is the best i have tasted ever in Italy.

The best meal we had in Rome was near/in Trastevere Le Mani In Pasta..just delicious

Wow, love the apartment. I would love to hear your personal opinion once you get to the apartment, especially whether the noise is acceptable or not. Not so much for the living room but from the bedroom. Also views as to whether there are food stores, great deli and wine stores nearby. Just the nitty gritty on living there. Looking forward to more.

Am I allowed to say I am soooo envious?
I LOVE Rome and as mentioned above I hope your third time is a charm. Three of my fodorite friends will be there the same time as you...I may need to bring this thread to their attention...maybe your paths will cross while in the eternal city!
I have a rather lengthy (25-ish pages)list of Rome restaurants/cafes/gelaterias/food shops listed by neighborhood which I have compiled over the last few years. Some places listed I have been too, others are my "wish list" for next time (because when it comes to me and Rome, there is always a next time!). Most of the places on the list I have pulled from interent articles, other trip reports, the chowhound website, and a book I have called Food Wine Rome. If you are interested I'd be happy to share my list with you. We may need to exchange real life emails, to do this, so if you are not up for doing that, I completely understand.
Also, you may want to check out Katie Parla's website (ParlaFood) she is a writer/blogger, an American living in Rome and she also conducts tours. She frequently writes food related Rome articles for the NY Times. She is also on Facebook and Twitter...I've been following her for a while and she always has something interesting to say about food!

Have a great time. Will be looking for more from you. Italy is the probable destination for in 2012, early Fall or over Christmas, so can't wait to read all about your trip.
We were in Paris this time last year and although we just got back, i am ready to go again but I haven't been to Italy in years and my husband has never been. It is time to skip Paris for a year or two (maybe).
Safe travels. We will be enjoying lots of Prosecco here this weekend!

I don't know as I'm about to find out, too! We leave Paris for Rome on Thursday so for now we're enjoying food and wine here in Paris - delicious! Meeting up with the 2 other Fodorites LCI was speaking of. We'll try not to cause an international incident!
