Hi again everyone! The Scandinavia trip is officially happening now! The airfares have been booked!
The dates are June 1st - June 18th 2012
The basic itenerary is as follows:
May 30th, fly from NZ to Hong Kong, fly Hong Kong to Frankfurt, fly Frankfurt to Helsinki
June 1st, 1am, Arrive Helsinki.
June 2nd-June 6th, Helsinki ( My father is at a conference from the 4th )
June 7th, Tallin ( conference excursion )
June 8-10, Stockholm ( conference excursion, overnight ferry from Helsinki )
June 11-18, Copenhagen and Denmark
It would be really wonderful if anyone knows of any apartments in Helsinki that are close to the Sybelius Hall ( that's where the conference is being held ) that have two bedrooms, a washing machine, free wifi, and are reasonably priced?
Also, my mini-itinerary for Denmark includes:
Two days in Copenhagen ( one of which will include Frederiksborg Palace )
A day in Roskilde ( Viking Ship Museum, Cathedral, Medieval Water Mill )
A day in Lejre ( Living History Outdoor Museum )
A day visiting the Viking Ring Fort and Longhouse at Trelleborg
A day trip out to the Island of Bornholm ( Round Churches, Quaint Fishing Villages )
Any suggestions regarding the logistics of any of these day trips would be most helpful! I'm not sure whether to go with the Visitor Center tour out to Bornholm or just go with the Bornholmbussen self-organized trip. Also, does anyone think the village of Kerteminde worth visiting?
It's really happening! Time to get planning!

Note: We have a whole day in Stockholm to plan ourselves. Vasamuseet? Nordic Museum? Old Town?
Sybelius Hall in Lahti? That appears to be an hour by train from central Helsinki. Sorry, in my travels to Finland, I've never been to Lahti, so can't suggest apartments there.
As for Stockholm, the Vasamuseet is my favorite. Impressive and moving self guided or with a tour. It is not a Viking ship as you know. It takes 1-2 hours to leisurely see. It can easily be combined with the Old Town, City Hall, a walk along the waterfront, the open air museum (unless you're getting enough of that in Denmark) and/or a trip on the water.
I've been to the Nordic museum and thought it "OK", but not a top destination for a first trip.
When I say Sybellius Hall, I mean the Finlandia Hall in Central Helsinki, but thanks

There are several apartment type hotels in the Parliament area, but the one above is only one I have personal experience with.
Yes, I think the village of Kerteminde worth visiting. It is a great place. I've been there last spring. It's a great place.
You can take a self guided walk with the help of a map and descriptive account from the hotel or the Tourist Office.
Because I stopped off to visit the Larsen Museum where I also had a cup of coffee, spent some time in a book shop. I left myself short of time. I wish I had another day I would have enjoyed taking a more leisurely stroll round this interesting old town.
Finally, make sure you work out the exchange rate in your head correctly!) It's usually difficult to follow the currency exchange.
