Itinerary suggestions for 7 day trip to Croatia

Hi Guys..

I shall be traveling with my wife to Croatia in the month of September.
I shall be based in Germany before the trip & can enter Dubrovnik or Split via Flight from Germany.
My return flight is from Pula on 8th day.
We are looking forward to 2 or 3 days in island to explore nature (please suggest some islands as there are too many options,) along with it visiting some nice places such as palaces etc.. We wont mind going for water sports, easy hikes, bicycle ride to give little energy to the trip..

Dubrovnik & plitvice lake seems to be two places that everyone talks about but I am not sure whether I can cover both within 7 days. There are lot of options that are running through our mind so it would be nice if you guys can share some experiences that may help us narrow down our options..

For convenience here is basic info about our itinerary -
Day 1 - Dubrovnik / Split (Will reach by 10 am)
Day 2 -
Day 3-
Day 4-
Day 5-
Day 6-
Day 7-Have to reach Pula to attend a concert in amphitheatre. (I wont mind taking a flight from Split to Pula a night before as it will save some time (& considering Croatian airlines is still not that expensive)
Day 8-Fly out of Pula.

Thanks a lot

Here's one possible way to approach it:

Day 1 - Dubrovnik
Day 2 - Dubrovnik
Day 3 - Korcula or Hvar
Day 4 - Korcula or Hvar
Day 5 - Split
Day 6 - Zadar
Day 7 - Pula
Day 8 - Pula

Your mode of transportation is going to make a big difference. If driving, the drive between Zadar and Pula will likely be the longest of them.

Korcula or Hvar: I'd vote for Korcula because that's the one I went to... can't speak from experience with Hvar. I really enjoyed the drive along the Peljesac peninsula on the way to Korcula but you need to look at ferry schedules for both islands to decide which works best for you.

No real good way to add in Plitvice NP with this amount of time. If you had another day or didn't need to be in Pula until day 8 you could probably make it happen.

Thanks John & Kja

I am getting a good connection from Germany to split a day earlier so I guess I shall go for it as it is adding one more night to my itinerary.
Also, From the past threads it is clear that it may not be a good idea to club Dubrovnik & pula due to the long distances & shortage of time..So I am letting go Dubrovnik for this trip ..

On the other hand I may get time for plitvice lake now.. I hope I am making the right choice between plitvice & Dubrovnik ...

For the island as John has suggested Korcula is one good option. Any reviews about other islands such as Vis, Brac.
Hvar seems to be little too commercial so I would avoid that ..

Last, I would love to drive a car but I am used to driving a car with stearing on right side (UK) .. I would need little time to adjust .. would you recommend hiring a car?

Thanks

I'm glad to hear that you'll be able to add a night!

"I hope I am making the right choice between plitvice & Dubrovnik ..."

Everyone is different, but I think your choice makes sense: See the magnificent Plitvice Lakes National Park while reasonably close to them. Save Dubrovnik for sometime when you can visit Korcula and Kotor, etc.

"For the island..."

Vis is, IMO, too far. Korcula, too, IMO. Please don't mistake Hvar TOWN -- which is beautiful, but very upscale -- with Hvar ISLAND -- which has other towns and cities. I loved Stari Grad, also on Hvar Island and easily reached by ferry from Split. Its a quiet place that doesn't get the same level of tourist traffic that Hvar Town gets.

And don't forget Trogir! I don't think it is an island, but its connection to the mainland is so limited that it feels like one. It's only 1/2 hour from Split and might be your best option given your limited time frame. Just a thought!

"would you recommend hiring a car?"

Depends on where you end up going and your preferences. Visiting Istria and the Plitvice Lakes can be easier with a car, but can be done using public transportation if you allow some time and allot some patience. Most of the other places you've mentioned can be easily visited by public transportation. Vis is an exception -- you almost certainly would need to rent something to get around there; search this board for posts by yorkshire to learn more.
