Itinerary in Spain

I am traveling to Spain for 11 days with my 18 year old daughter. We are flying into Madrid and have rented a car and, besides a 2 night stay in Madrid, have not made any travel plans. We want to see as much of Spain as possible (within reason!) and are looking for suggestions as to where to go. Any ideas?

Robin, To me, the best way to see the msot of a country, is to pick two or three places and really get to know them. Madrid, Barcelona, Sevilla and the surrounding areas are the three places that come to mind. Check out the postings on this site and you will get a ton of ideas. Enjoy!

Hi NEAR Madrid you can visit Avila and Segovia and then Salamanca.
All three fascinating places.
Then you need to decide which way you prefer, the South ,the North....East or West, Karen Brown 's Charming Inn and Itineraries is an ideal book ....

While in madrid last week we made two special visits. Salamanca is a great town to stay in and we had a wonderful hotel at a great price close to everything. My favorite spot in all the world is cuenca. A small city 2 hours by train away. We stayed in a posada that had been a convent in the 1600 that was 55 euros a night and had a fabulous room. You need to stay in the old city and be sure that you are there at night when they light up the rocks at night. this is the spot my ashes will go when i die. that is how special this place is. it cost 8.8 euros to get there.

You're going to be so close to Toledo, I suggest you make a side trip there. It's very special. There's an inexpensive hotel that's very beautiful and has a great restaurant I'd suggest--Hostal del Cardinal--build into the old city walls.

This to say that I also think like Ann Young that Cuenca is lovely, and we did stay in the same posada San Jose,....I guess you can travel all around Madrid including all these fascinating places like El Escorial, Segovia,Avila,Salamanca, Toledo, Cuenca....all worth visiting and many more.....
