Itinerary help for Bavaria

My daughter and I are planning a last minute trip to Bavaria in late July. We welcome any advice or suggestions you have. Please comment on our rough itinerary. Our flights are confirmed.

Day 1: Fly from London to Innsbruck. Arrive in the afternoon, pick up a rental car and spend one night there.
Day 2: Spend the day in Innsbruck and then in the afternoon, drive to a central base for four nights. We will spend the next 3 days visiting the castles, Oberammergau, Garmisch, Linderhof castle, Ettal Monastery, Mittenwald, etc. We would like to do some hiking as well. We welcome your suggestions and preferences. We especially need advice on where to make our base. We prefer to stay in one place, not moving frequently.
Day 6: Drive to Salzburg or Berchtesgaden: Which would be the better place to stay to visit the area? We will spend 3 nights in the area. We would like to do some hiking and enjoy some music.
Day 9: Drive or take the train to Munich: Would it be helpful to have a car between Salzburg and Munich or would it be better to return the car in Salzburg, Austria, to save on the rental car fee for dropping the car in a different country? If we drive, what are the highlights?
Day 10 and 11: Visit Munich and fly back to London on a late evening flight.
