My husband and I will be in Switzerland late July/early August. We will be arriving in Basel via train and flying out of Geneva. We would like to go to Jungfrau, Lucern, and Zermatt. We would like a few days in one spot where we can relax and do some hiking in the mountains (Kandersteg looks interesting). We were planning on taking the train everywhere. Any suggestions/help much appreciated.

Hi rphamy,
You have listed four places you'd like to see in only 8 days (7 nights?). That means you'll be moving about every other day, giving you only one full day, or less, at each spot.
I strongly encourage you to see fewer places for your trip. You could conceivably see Luzern while enroute from Basel to your first destination, but the Jungfraujoch and Zermatt both take a loong train trip to get to and deserve a couple of days.
And I assume you need to be located nearby Geneva for your last night (night #7?).
So I recommend that you only have two bases, plus your last-night base. If you want to go hiking in the mountains, make the mountains one of your bases.
If you see Luzern while enroute on your first day, you could do either one of these itineraries:
Jungfrau area (Wengen or Mürren) x3 nights
Zermatt x3 nights
Geneva x1 night
Kandersteg x3 nights
Zermatt x3 nights
Geneva x1 night
Jungfrau area (Wengen or Mürren) x3 nights
Kandersteg x3 nights
Geneva x1 nights
You can see the train schedules at the Swiss rail site at
www.rail.ch
Have fun as you plan!
