Itinerary- HELP!

Hi,

This is my first post and I wish it wasn’t help with an itinerary but guess what? It is!

I have done lots of research and planned other trips in the past, but this one is a bit different. It’s changed over the past week because I am now going solo. I was suppose to have spent 5 days in Barcelona and was to stay with the person I had planned this trip with. Now that is not an option. I am a female in my 20’s and this would not be my first solo trip, however I am a bit sketched about Rome. I had some issues when I was in Paris and Barcelona last year.

Is this even do able? Or is my time better spent elsewhere?

Sept.12 - leave Vancouver
Sept.13 - arrive Lisbon (2:30pm nap time)
Sept.16 - leave Lisbon/arrive Rome (9:45am)

Sept.19 - leave Rome/arrive Dubrovnik (not yet booked)
Sept.22 or 23 - leave Dubrovnik/ arrive Barcelona (not yet booked)
Sept.24 - leave Barcelona (7am) / arrive Vancouver

So I only really have up until the 19th planned! Any suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks!!

Britany

You must enjoy planes.
Why so far? I would spend all of your time in Portugal---about right for 10 days.

I already have my flight booked to Rome! I know it is a bit of a rush, however I dont get the chance to go to Europe often. Portugal wasnt my idea to begin with, I can thank my ex travel buddy for that one.

No need to be particularly nervous about Rome. It is a fabulous and safe city with lots to do. But is there a particular reason you are going from Rome to Dubrovnik, and how would you travel there? It would most likely be cheaper, faster, and easier to travel to either Florence or Venice instead. You could take a train from Rome. Dubrovnik is a wonderful city, but can be difficult to get to and I think complicates your itinerary. Staying in Italy will likely save you time and money, while still providing a rich cultural experience. Check flight connections to Barcelona from both cities to see which would be more convenient for you.

ditto what msteacher said.

BTW, I love traveling solo! You can do exactly what you want when you want.... I find it an incredible self-indulgence!

What were the issues you had in Paris and Barcelona?

What do you enjoy doing while you are traveling?

Lisbon is a beautiful place, and it might be especially interesting for you to compare it to Vancouver. Lisbon is a city that has a lot of global influences. It will really help you enjoy the city, I think, if you do as much reading as you can about Lisbon, including blogs on the internet.

It would be easier for others to make suggestions about what to do after the 19th if you said more about why you are considering Dubrovnik and why you are nervous about Rome. Is it based on negative experiences in Paris?

September is a good month to travel, so you could go anywhere, small towns, big towns, medium sized cities, scenic places. I am wondering if you would enjoy the Amalfi coast. Do you like to hike? Or would rather be someplace with lots of art and history?

I would have thought the only critical issue in Rome will be wandering hands on the trams. If that is a serious concern, use taxis or travel when the trams are not densely packed.

I might drop our Dubrovnik (it is pretty but you are going to Lisbon right ) Have a serious look at http://www.visitportugal.com/Culture...S/default.html and you will find a bunch of places as pretty there.

Not many Fodorites go to Portugal but it is a great place, surf on this website for a few threads and see what people did. The train system in Portugal is cheap and efficient, you'll love it.

Please drop Dubrovnik and add the time to Rome or Barcelona. You have 4 cities in 10 days. It's a bit nuts. Did you see anything in Barcelona last year or was it another fly in and fly out?

I'd also like to know what issues you had in Paris and Barcelona. Reveal all!

You can fly from Dubrovnik back to Vancouver instead of returning to Portugal/Spain for your trans-Atlantic departure. The round-trip ticket will cost more, but you will have saved the time of retracing your steps westward, plus the cost of that travel back to the western end of the Mediterranean.
But better still, take the advice of previous posters and concentrate on Spain and Portugal for your 12 days. The suggestion for a multi-destination plane ticket is even more efficient in that circumstance.

Thanks everyone for your input. Sorry for the late reply, I have been very busy and avoiding dealing with this trip all together!

I have actually switched my flights around and will be leaving NOV.7-NOV.27.

I am now going to...

Rome, Florence, Venice, Paris and will fly out of Amsterdam.

I know that this is also an itinerary that is fast paced but I will be in Rome for 5 days, Paris for 5, 2 in Florence and Venice and 3 in Amsterdam.

I have pretty much everything planned out... in my head lol! Any suggestions are appreciated.
