Itinerary for 3 days in Crete-Greece

Greetings. I'll be travelling to Crete in a few weeks and wanted some advice on my itinerary:

Day One: Flight from Athens to Heraklion arriving about noon. Pick up rental car and drive to Knossos for the afternoon, then drive west and find inexpensive b&b type hotel in either Rethmyno or Chania.

Day two: drive down towards the Sumarian Gorge and explore the interior of the island.

Day three: no plans (any suggestions welcome).

Morning of day Four: Ferry from Chania to Santorini.

thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'm not sure what help you want, but for day three I'd suggest you go west to Elafonissos, and enjoy the beach

Sounds like a great itinerary. Visiting Knossos and the acheological museum in Heraklion were tops on my list, but I realy enjoyed exploring the interior and south coast. Very relaxing and refreshing.

Quick question. I will be arriving in Heraklion from Santorini and then staying in Chania. I would like to see Knossos. Should I stay a night so I can visit Knossos and then hop a bus to Chania? Or is there anyplace that I could store my luggage, see Knossos same day and then jump the bus to Chania? I just know once I get to Chania I won't head back East to see Knossos. Any ideas?

Knossos is a highlight. If you "know" you won't go back east, then for heaven's sakes stay. Are you flying in or ferrying in?

Try to find time to see the museum too.

Hi Sheila,

We are coming in by ferry from Santorini. I was thinking about renting a car so we could have a place to put our bags, then going to Knossos, and the big Museum and then driving to Chania. What do you think? I really don't want to stay a night if we don't have to. Thanks!

That strikes me as a good plan.

There may be a left luggage at the ferry terminal or the bus station at Iraklion, but I don't know. You could ask on explorecrete.com.

Try these mods:

Day one: You are missing out the Archeological museum in Iraklion, well worth a visit all the interesting stuff is in there. Drive to Paleochora on the SW coast (plenty or rooms places).

Day two: Take the early morning bus to Xyloskalo, walk down the Samaria gorge, return by ferry to Paleochora.

Day three: Take a relaxing boat trip to Elafonissi.

Day four: There is no ferry from Chania to Santorini, so you will need to go to Iraklion.

You really do need a lot more time on Crete.

Dear Retsina,

Unfortunatley we do only have 5 days on Crete. We will not be going from Crete to Santorini we will be coming from Santorini. Our plan is to rent a car and stay in Heraklio one night so we can see Knossos and the Museum. Then we will spend a day driving to Chania and stop wherever we want along the way. We are hiking the Gorge one day and will keep the car to explore another day. I think the last 2 days we will just want to relax and enjoy Chania. Thanks for the suggestions.
