Itinerary advice: Vienna, Salzburg, Regensburg...Munich? (& a twist)

Jump to last reply

Hoping for advice in as our 'nailed down' plans now need an overhaul. We're flying from the States to Munich round trip in late August with the idea of spending time in Vienna (free place to stay on the ring therefore less guilt about getting over jet lag) before going to the Formula 1 race/related in Spa, Belgium, then exploring Salzburg, hopefully a bit of the Salzkammergut and also Regensburg/surrounds. In 13 days.

Hoping for thoughts/help on our itinerary, including time allotted to each place. Here's what I'm thinking at the moment:
1) Arrive Munich Monday afternoon, train to Vienna arriving 7:30pm
2) Vienna = 4 full days
(poss day trip to Melk); depart Friday a.m. to get to F1 practice (flying from Vienna to Cologne looks like the best & cheapest bet)
3) Maastricht old town = 3 days
(so we have something to do between races - we'll be renting a car for this portion of the trip); Monday morning fly from Cologne to Salzburg, arriving 11:20am *non-negotiable part of trip*
4) Salzburg = 2 days
(Monday departing Wednesday), with rental car, hoping to see some of the Lake District
5) Regensburg = 2 days
Weds departing Friday), still with rental car, driving to Munich
6) Munich = 1 day
(Friday), flying out at 2pm on Saturday

The last 5 days feel tight, esp. for our leisurely "experience local living" travel style. Should we skip Munich altogether and just drive there the day we fly (Saturday)?
If so, should we add a night to Salzburg or Regensburg?
Or, should we just leave Regensburg in the late afternoon on Friday, thereby just having an evening and morning in Munich?
Etc., etc.

Thank you very much in advance for your patience in getting your heads around this, and your great advice!
