OK Folks, I need help. I am 64 and have a degenerative muscle disease. I can walk. i cannot walk fast, nor can i get up a curb or stair without assistance. I will have my son with me, so I will have assistance. We will have 17 days in Europe, not including travel to and from. Money is a factor. Questions. where should we go, considering this will be the only trip? Also, car or train?

Hello,
I am glad you are able to take a trip. My sister has arthritis so bad that she hardly gets around. Would you consider being in a wheelchair in some locations?
I think a car would be better as you would have more control over where and when you got in and out of it.
Many places in Italy would be fine for you. Florence is small but is full of art treasures. Michealangelo's David it in a small museum and the Uffizi Gallery is walkable if you take some rest breaks. (Dont' miss the Birth of Venus or the Primavera)..
Just driving in the country side in Italy is so fun. There are quaint little towns where it is fun to stop for a bite to eat and just to absorb the place..
Rome might be a bit much for you as there is so much traffic and it is impossible to drive there. Down south in Italy on the Amalfi coast it is breathtakingly beautiful. Sorrento is a wonderful town and there are many daytrips you can take from there.
Wherever you go I hope you have a wonderful time..

You might consider southern Germany. It is quite beautiful and easy to drive in. I definitely recommend a car. You can stop where you like. Frankly, I found the Germany much cheaper than England or France and the food was quite good.
I don't think that your special needs drive the answer to this question all that much - - except to rule out a handful of places.
I think that the answer is no different to someone who asks the open-ended question "where to go in Europe?"
I throw the question back at you: why do YOU think you want to go to europe?
Tell us the pictures in your head of europe - - and then go to the library, bookstore, or both and spend 4 hours with an assortment of big picture-filled, coffee-table sized books. Tell us what makes you salivate, and then we can answer the question.
You can spend 17 days more economically in Portugal than in Scandinavia - - but what is the relevance of that if your idea of Europe is fjords and your ancestral home in Denmark?
What if we propose Berlin, and what you really want to do is follow in the footsteps of Paul the Apostle?
Fill in some more info for us about what's in your heart and your dreams of Europe, and then meaningful answers will come forward.
Best wishes,
Rex
