Italy with Kids

Jump to last reply

Planning a trip this August with 2 boys aged 9 and 12. Preliminary itinerary includes Bolzano, Venice and Rome. We're planning a total of 9-10 days on the ground. Key questions:
1) should we use trains or rent a car at any point?
2) is there a Series A soccer/futbal game in the month of August?
3) where should we fly into / out of?
4) what else am I missing?

Any thoughts appreciated - thanks.

kaandler - I lost my first reply to this as i was trying to look up when the "calcio" [italian for football] starts again. the answer is that Serie A games [the top league in Italy] don't start until September, but there may be some Europa League matches involving italian teams in August - but we won't know until the leagues finish in May and we find out who finished where.

that however seems to me to be the least of your potential problems - Italy can be VERY hot in august. personally I wouldn't want to be in Rome with 2 young lads in august unless you/they are used to that sort of climate and having a nap between 2-5pm.

personally I would look at a family friendly place like the lakes for the majority of the trip. We had a great week in august on Lake Garda when our kids were not much older than this; we had access to a swimming pool, there were boat trips, cool breezes from the lake, gardaland and the water park to entertain the kids, and loads to see and do.

you could top or tail this with a few days in Venice, but i would avoid long train or car journeys, lots of time in cities, etc.

you could fly into venice or verona.

I know what I have suggested isn't the trip you asked about.

if you were determined to do it, i would suggest flying into venice, staying 3 nights, then renting a car from one of the the car rental offices at piazzale roma, driving to Bolzano, then back to Verona [or possibly Milan as the connections may be better/fewer] and getting the train to Rome from there.

but that is a lot to do in 9-10 days. I'd stick to Venice and Bolzano possibly ending in milan if you really want the city/bolzano/city combination.

it goes without saying that you'd want A/C in your hotels and car.
