Italy Travelogue, part I (Rome)

Back from three weeks in Italy (with our 3 year old and 6 month old). We went from Rome up to Tuscany and Umbria before finishing the trip on the Amalfi coast.

I just posted a travelogue this morning

http://www.hitherandthither.net/2014...ome-italy.html

about the first leg of the trip.

Thank you to those on the forums who helped shape our itinerary!
Ashley

Thank you, @bab706! I should have Tuscany and Umbria finished this week and Positano next week.

I also posted about our boat rental in Positano, here--but the topic is more about traveling with kids.

Thanks again!

Looks like you had a wonderful time in Rome. When exactly were you there? We were there in July and the weather was much cooler than it usually is, I think the entire season has been cool (and with more rain). But I'm curious as to whether your trip was in August or September. I usually go to Europe in July each year but am considering switching to August and was wondering what the crowds were like then.

I remember from when you were planning the trip you were considering Puglia. We were there in July and so if you are still considering it for a future trip you might be interested in my trip report (http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...ast-puglia.cfm)

Looking forward to the rest of your report.

Thank you for your report.
So happy that your trip with your lovely family seemed to be fabulous.

I love the pictures and looking forward to hearing and seeing more .

A few years ago I took a similar trip to Rome, Tuscany and Umbria with my nephew, neice and their 3 year old boy and all of us had a great time.Your report brought back many good memories.

I am in awe of your trip with young children. Bravo for the memories your young son will have. By the way, the pictures were wonderful.

Thank you for posting the wonderful pictures of Rome and relating your family's adventures. My boys are long grown but your story makes me wish we had "dived" (per your comment on the "thoughts" blog)into a European adventure when they were young.

Thank you, all! I'm looking forward to wrapping it up (but it's hard editing photos)! Wonderful to hear that you enjoyed the trip report.

Oh! And @Isabel:
We were there 8/23-9/11. We were in Rome through August 25th and I thought it seemed pretty uncrowded, actually. The city was very quiet compared to what I'd expected. Of course we saw heavier crowds around Ancient Rome sights, but in general I think so many Romans are on holiday and it felt fairly peaceful.

It was cool in Tuscany when we got there at the end of the month--rainy, even!

Looking forward to sitting down to read your trip report! Would love to return and make it to Puglia.

All best,
Ashley

Ashley, your reports are wonderful! I stumbled upon your report on Ireland this past spring, right before our trip to Ireland. Now we are planning for Italy in 2015; impeccable timing!
Your pictures are amazing and your stories are so charming. Thanks for all your time and effort.

Happy travels,
Jackie
