Italy School Holiday Dates Summer 2013

I am trying to find out the dates for summer school holidays in Italy for this year. Looking at several websites, I'm seeing that the holidays end on 31 August, or 10 September or 16 September. From this, I'm wondering if the holidays are different for each region?

I'd like to know when the children are going to go back to school; we are planning a cruise from Venice and would prefer not to be on a ship with large numbers of children.

Can anyone enlighten me, please?
