Italy - Rome

Hello,

I'm going to be traveling to Rome in October. I'm going to be in Rome for three days and wanted to ask the forum a few questions.

What are the must see sites in Rome?

If I was going to take a day trip from Rome what is the best day trip?

If I was going to see one other place in Italy besides Rome where should I go?

Even consider buying a guide book and deciding for yourself? Most must see sites are always id in the guide books and that is where all the tourists are. Really, with knowing your likes and dislikes it is hard to recommend one site or another. You cannot see Rome is three days so save the day trip from Rome for your next visit. For one other place some say Venice, Florence, Sorrento, etc. No one place is better than another. All personal preference.

For the stuff that's too recent - or too short-lived - for any guidebook, what I turn to before our visits is a handy monthly magazine given away in hotels and the like..... "Un Ospite a Roma - A guest in Rome". It's also a fairly reliable source for the opening times etc at most of the main attractions!

With any luck you'll find a copy, but it might do no harm to download the PDF version beforehand? Start here, and click on the picture of its cover, over to the right of the screen:

With only 3 days, I'd not bother going very far - but, instead, how about the ruined Roman town of Ostia Antica, which is within the city limits and only a 1 Euro train ride...
