Italy road trip - Sorrento area
Hi!
I will be visiting Sorrento next year with my other half for a friends wedding and we have always wanted to do a bit of travellling in Italy. We will realistically probably only be able to spend max 2 weeks there, and the obvious choice is to drive the AC.
However we will be there in peak season and from what advice I've read, the roads are so busy that it wont be an enjoyable drive.
Just looking for some advice if anyone has done road trips around June/July, and also if anyone can advise any alternatives in the area? We would prefer to see some of the real Italy and visit smaller villages but I guess we would need to go more inland for that - we are not particularly looking to tick off a checklist of tourist areas, although at the same time we are not against it. Any tips welcome, Thanks!

You can absolutely drive the Amalfi Coast road - just do it at sunrise when the traffic is minimal, head down to Salerno and maybe on to Agerola or Paestum.
The Cilento coast is made for car travel as it is largely inaccessible by convenient public transportation. You could also visit Matera and visit the famous sassi homes.

The AC is a small area and while the tiny towns on the coast are charming you really can see quite a bit in one week and then spend another week seeing a different part of the country. Perhaps Rome which is magnificent. Of perhaps a couple of towns in Tuscany is you prefer smallish hill towns.
In any case it will be hot an humid and mobbed - basically wherever you go.
Realistically to see the small towns on the coast stay in one and take a bus to the others. Or stay in Sorrento to have access to ferries, train and buses - so you can see Pompeii, Capri, plus some towns down the coast.
Be aware that except for dawn and late at night the traffic on the coast road is bumper to bumper with buses mobbed (SRO) so you often ned to wait for the next. Ferry has better views but they run rarely except from Sorrento or Naples.
