Were you unable to find weather info on any of the many internet weather sites, such as weather.com?

What temp do you normally consider warm enough to swim?

For me anything over 21-22CC and it's warm enough to swim. For my current wife, it needs to be closer to 30, with a water temp nearly the same.

Can anyone steer me to a weather site where I can look up the weather history for a particular month--for example, if I would like to see what kind of weather to expect in Bari in September: temps and, especially, the chance of precipitation?

Many thanks! ( I am also thinking about a trip to the region--in my case, perhaps in September..and would like to minimize the chances of having many days of rain.)

thanks ipod_robbie but i asked people on this site as i prefer answers from indigenous or people who know the area rather than some 'stat'. if you cant answer the Q why bother replying? i didnt ask "what sort of water does your wife like"

Weatherbase might give a little more detail than weather.com.
http://www.weatherbase.com/

Or wunderground.
http://www.wunderground.com/history/

And the government website.

Chevgr has made it clear he/she doesn't want a website with details about the weather - he/she wants to know from the indigenous people what it's usually like.

He/she also doesn't care if it's 20C or 30C, but want's to know if it's warm enough to swim, without giving any indication of what he/she considers warm enough to swim.

I've been to the coast of Maine in July and there are people swimming - not many, but to them it's warm enough.

Just a gentle suggestion, Chevgr as you are a new poster.

The old saying that you will collect more flies with honey versus vinegar still holds true.

First of all if there are any Fodorite's that live in Puglia I don't know of any but if there are there is not that many.

Ipod_robbie shared his thoughts but you took offense. I wouldn't "dare" post regarding your question as I would no doubt get the same response from you I believe. And since you don't state how warm you consider the water should be how would any Fodorite know whether or not it would be warm enough for you?

Having said that I wish you a lovely time in Italy.

Chevgr, if it helps, I have a holiday home in Puglia, and have been there many times in May.

The area is just starting to gear up for summer at that time - the Pugliese only really start hitting the beaches in earnest from mid-June, but then, these are a people that don't take off their bodywarmers unless it's over 30C.

Being a mild-weathered Brit, I find May can be lovely and warm, usually mid-20s (c) and usually warm enough for the beach, although the sea is still on the cool side.

Be warned, however, that unless they regard the weather as hitting an unusual heat wave at the time you visit, they may not yet have cleaned the beaches for the summer season. A lot of detritous gets washed up over the winter months which can make some of the beaches look scruffy until they clean them.

You don't say where you are staying, but FYI I have found the nicest beaches on the north coast to be in an area called 'Peloni' just to the north of Ostuni, particularly the Bosco Verdi beach. If any will get cleaned at this time of year, you might have most luck there.

Hope that helps.

Kate: Many thanks. Your info is helpful to me also since I am in the early stages of planning a trip to the region. Would you mind letting me know if, in your experience, there is a good chance of rain in mid- to late-September?

KYBourbon: thanks for posting those links!

I had a chance to take a look at the Wunderground site; although data on precipitation is missing from many days, it appears that September is quite a rainy month in the region. But on Weatherbase, rainfall is said to be minimal in September! Who knows??!

eks - I can't imagine the weather will be much different than the Amalfi coast in September and there were people swimming on my last trip (late Sept.). It would have been too cool for me. I've only been to Bari once in late March, but had warm weather (sunny/upper 70's).

When I was in Puglia in May a few years ago I encountered one drenching downpour and otherwise what I would call very hot temperatures.

Ky: The reason for my concern is that I had horrible weather last September on Ischia and several people there told me that mid-late September tended to be rainy in southern Italy...this seems to be supported by one or two, but not all, of the weather sites... I am trying to minimize my chances of another trip hampered by bad weather, to the extent that this is possible!

Hi ekscrunchy. I would hate to guarantee dry weather for you, because I'm bound be found wrong as September is a bit 'who knows?'There is certainly a higher chance of rain than in May-July but I think you'd be very unlucky to have a complete wash out.

My experience at that time of year is that it will be mostly hot and dry but with the odd day of rain and thunderstorms. Couldn't be any more accurate than that I'm afraid. I'm planning on going myself in September and fully expect to get some sunbathing/beach time in if you want to take that as a measure!

Hi all,
I am native to Puglia and I live in Puglia. I can say that the weather in May is very beautiful: warm enough to go to the beach during the day but not too hot like in July or August. When I say warm I mean 24-29 °C at midday.
September may be very beautiful but we may have some rainy days. However, in Puglia when it rains it last a couple of hours and then it's sunny again.
Another thing you should know is that in Puglia the weather is completely different depending on where you are. Towns who are 10 miles apart may have completely different weather. Hope this helps!

Puglia: Thanks for the response. I can only hope for good weather during my visit in September. I am going to begin a thread about eating in Puglia and hope that you will share some of your favorite places to dine, especially those that might not be listed in the English-language guidebooks.

This was all very helpful, just wondered if puglia_cooking could give me some more help. On the weather subject... Planning on getting married in martina Franca next may around the 3rd week. Planning on dinning outside and just wondered if the you had any opinions on the temperature or if its a good idea.

Thanks
Angela
