hi - I need help!
I can't seem to find a clear idea of how to navigate the amalfi coast for 5 nights next August. (yes that's the only time we can go - 7 friends).
We'll be flying SFO to Naples.
2 nights in Naples: we plan to visit at a bare minimum the Archealogical musuem, Veiled Christ on day one. Day two we plan to go to Pompeii by train (30 mts) and back.
Day 3: I'm thinking since we're not particularly rich people and the $ is at a disadvantage to the Euro we should go to salerno. Base ourselves here.
Day 4: bus ride from Salerno to Sorrento and back??? (spectacular views abound?)
Day 5: Salerno to Capri and back.
Then we're off to Turkey for 10 days. What do you folks think? how can i best take in the Amalfi coast in 5 days??
thanks!

For your stay in Naples consider http://www.bebmedea.com/ . We liked it.
Day one will be very limited as you are likely to arrive around mid-day. If you could add an extra day to Naples, you could just take in the old city on your first day, staying on your feet to stay awake.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mksfca/sets/72157627058744325/show/
You might want to take a look at my trip report; click on my name to find it.
If you would state your hotel budget, we might have better suggestions than Salerno.
I would buy the 3 day Campania ArteCard Tutta la Regione (27€). It's the only one that includes transport down the coast (and metro/funiculars, etc. in Naples). It includes two free entrances to sites (you could use one day in Naples at the museum and the next day for entrance to Pompeii as your free entrances).
http://www.campaniartecard.it/#
I don't think I would use it on arrival day as that might just waste a day of transport, but it depends on where you will be staying. You can take the Alibus from the airport to Naples train station or port for a few euro.
Day 1 - Arrival
Day 2 - Museum (free with Artecard) - transport around city (free)
Day 3 - Pompeii 11€ (free with Artecard) via Circumvesuviana train (free with ArteCard).
Day 4 - Bus or train down the coast (bus free with ArteCard, certain trains free with ArteCard).
It's not clear how many days you have or if you were counting arrival day as a sightseeing day.
You might also consider staying on the coast first and ending in Naples so you will be close to the airport for your departure to Turkey. If so, you could use Sorrento as a base and transfer from the airport to Sorrento via Curreri shuttle bus (10€). Visit Capri (ferry or hydrofoil from Sorrento), then coast, Pompeii and Naples. Time the Artecard for the three consecutive days where you will get the most value.
Salerno is a busy industrial town without a great deal of charm. Just north of Salerno is Vietri sul Mare, which has a bit more beach resort feel. I expect that you could easily connect to transportation hubs in Salerno, which is only a few miles south. There are hotels in Vietri sul Mare in the $120 per night range, which is cheaper than what you'd be likely to pay just north on the Amalfi Coast. Another thing to consider if you're in that area is a trip to Paestum, about an hour south of Salerno. The Greek temple ruins in Paestum rival those of Athens, and the crowds are considerably less. It would be an easy day trip, and I doubt it would be hard to find a bus or train, but I don't know the schedules since we were traveling by car. Enjoy the area!
thank you all so much for your replies! To clarify the schedule:
as of now i'm planning to leave on a thursday night (day 1), arriving in Naples Friday afternoon. Planning to just walk around old town. (day 2)
Day 3 would be the museum and veiled christ. Day 4 would include Pompeii.
Day 5 - we would now head somewhere to the coast.
Day 6
Day 7
Day 8
Day 9 -
Day 10 - we would fly out from Naples to Istanbul.
Since we're 7 of us it would be great after Naples to settle down for the remaining 5 nights in a villa/hotel somewhere along the coast (about $50-70 per night per person?) and then use that as a base to make day trips to ...ravello, capri..positano...sorrento...at a minimum.
ArteCard is a great idea - thank you - will defly get that. So sounds like Sorrento may be a good base? Thanks for the Paestum suggestion as well.
We stopped in Pompeii on the way to Sorrento...and it takes about half a day to see. Sorrento is a good base for your trips to Capri and Positano. Try venere.com for lodging. The only other advice I can offer is 1) be SURE you have comfortable walking shoes for pompeii and Positano and Capri...and 2) Try not to eat in the cafeteria-style place at Pompeii (barf) if you are hungry, and do some research about where to eat in Capri. We didn't..it was raining...and we ended up at Restaurante Isidoro...where we had terrible food, got charged 3Euros extra because we split the slimy pizza, and the waiter was a jerk. Pretty place, tho
You're gonna pay...so make sure it's at least good food.
When we did a similar trip, after arrival in Naples, we took the train to Pompeii, stored luggage, saw the site, then trained to sorrento for three nights. Stayed at il nido and took busses to see the coast. Then last day with luggage, went to capri, stored luggage in a shop, visited Capri and took ferry to Naples for one night. See if that works for you.
"We stopped in Pompeii... and it takes about half a day to see." The amount of time you need to "see" Pompeii depends entirely on your interest level. FWIW, we spent an entire day in Pompeii on our first visit there and didn't see everything. We spent another half day on another trip and still didn't see everything but probably all that we were most interested in seeing. Pompeii is one of the most fascinating places I've ever been, but I admit to a higher-than-average interest level.
Without over analyzing it too much, I think I would
Day 1 - Depart home
Day 2 - Arrive Naples, continue straight to Sorrento (or
where ever you want to base for four/five days),
relax, walk around and enjoy a nice dinner.
Days 3 - 8 Play it by ear, depending on how you feel
Visit Pompeii one day
Take ferry or bus down the coast to Positano and/or
Amalfi one day.
Ferry to Capri one day (or go to Capri on day 8 and
spend the night.
Day 9 - head for Naples early in the day. Visit the museum,
see the museum with the veiled Christ.
Day 10 - depart
Alternatively,
Day 7 - go to Capri, spend the night
Day 8 - 9, Naples: See museums and Herculaneum (some think it is very worth while, others do not), or visit Pompeii from Naples one of these days.
You can see, since you want to see things there anyway, I would put Naples at the end for easy access to your flight, and somewhere on the Coast (or Sorrento on the Bay) for a first night to relax instead of Naples.
If you want to visit Paestum, others can offer different/better advice.
I would absolutely have a hotel with a pool in August. I would also (unless you are going to spend the night there) not have set days for Capri or Pompeii. That way, people can go off on their own and take as much time as they want in different places. Some people might choose some days not to tour. In August, I would not try to visit Pompeii on the day you arrive - not enough time and too hot mid afternoon.
The AC/Naples combined with Turkey sounds like the most perfect of all trips.
Sorrento would make a better base than Solerno. It has easy connections to anywhere on the coast via train, bus or ferry, plus numerous hotels and restaurants.
I also agree to go straight to Sorrento, rent a villa, visit the towns by boat or bus. You could even visit Naples on a day trip from Sorrento, instead of staying there. Try VRBO or HomeAway for villa rentals.
So you have 10 days for Naples and the coast instead of 5? I would still head to the coast upon arrival and put Naples at the end. It really makes it easier to get to the airport on departure day especially if you have an early flight.
I would choose either Amalfi or Sorrento over Salerno for a base.
You won't find many villas that won't require a car although you can find apartments to rent.
The villa rental is a pretty good idea if you have 7 people on a budget. You probably can find some kind of deal that works for you. I would think you could find something for $350-$450/nt (7 x $50-70)The only obstacle in high season is that you want a rental for less than a week. Still it's do-able.
I can recommend the Villa Punta Del Sole in Positano. It'll accommodate 7 and I think is in your budget. It's on VRBO.com. I think it would run you about $75/person/nt. Plus, you could save some money by having a meal or two at the place -- with a spectacular view of the sea.
I agree with renting a villa - very affordable with 7 people. We rented Villa Le Sirene in Positano for a week last year and absolutely loved it. You not only save money on the rooms, but also on food as you can eat at "home". From Pos, we took a day trip via ferry to Capri, another day trip via ferry to Amalfi and Ravello, another day trip via ferry to Salerno and Vietri Sul Mare. Another day we spent relaxing on Fornillo beach, and another day we took the small boat to Laurito beach and had lunch at the beach bar there.
The website for the villa is www.villalesirene.com.
we chose Naples(4 nights) and Salerno(3 nights) as a base and toured the Amalfi coast in August 2011.I can recommend Best Western Plaza Hotel in Naples(50 e/double B&B) and Hotel Plaza in Salerno(85 e/double B&B) just across the train station in Salerno.(both were early bookings via HRS and booking.com)
Day 1-Naples
Day 2- day trip to Capri&Anacapri(ferry from the molo beverello port-1 hr)

forgot to ask if you need any help with your Turkey itinerary
wow thank you all so much fr your detailed advice - very very helpful. I was not keen on arriving in Naples and immediately departing for Sorrento (as the base) because I thought it may be too much travel after having traveled from San Francisco....on the other hand I understand it's just a 1 hr train ride at best? Do i not need to worry if flight is delayed into naples - how it may affect my train journey into Sorrento? Am i being overcautious...
And i thought Amalfi was always something I needed to see....i've seen pictures...it's beautiful.
I also get the advantage of being in Naples toward the end as it's easier to depart to Istanbul.
So it sounds like the recommendation is to land into Naples, depart via train to sorrento and base ourselves there. From there take day trips to Pompeii, Capri, Positano, Ravello, Naples (rather than staying in Naples even).....ok.
will look into the villas described here....
Also i know Amalfi coast is over priced and inundated with tourists in august....and not being able to really hang out in the ocean in any of the beaches is also...sad..although the views will make up for it....but should i consider maybe Portugal instead of Amalfi Coast (has anyone been??) - it's also full of beaches that you can swim in and warm...except a lot farther to istanbul
Any beach town recommendations in Amalfi coast or easy day trips? I saw mentions of Fornillo beach and Laurito beach here....let me look that up...most of the beaches on the amalfi i read are not conducive to frolicking in the actual water...unless u like diving off of small cliffs/rocks...which i don't.
Turkey help yes I need - but let me first clarify my Italy itinerary first! Thank you all again!
Fornillo beach is the smaller beach in Positano. It has several beach bars and sunbeds for rent. We spent a fantastic day there in July - just got there fairly early, paid for our sunbeds and spent several hours before and after dinner on the beach and playing in the water - a very nice place to swim.
Our day at Laurito beach was our favorite of the trip - you catch a small boat at the dock in Positano and take a 10 minute boat ride to a small cove where there are 2 beach bar/restaurants and sun loungers to rent. Again, we had a wonderful day playing in the water and laying the sun, and had a fantastic lunch in our bathing suits in the beach bar.
Every place on the Amalfi Coast has tons of tourists in August. But if you go to the smaller beaches (or even take a boat ride) for the day it is very enjoyable and things are much quieter at night. Positano has lots of alleys and stairways where you can escape from the crowds if you want. Also, the villa I recommended above has a fantastic terrace where you can lay in the sun during the day and enjoy wine in the afternoon shade and dinner at night!
If you want to stay on the Amalfi Coast, don't spend all your time in Sorrento - it is not on the Amalfi Coast. It is a good base for Pompeii, Herculaneum, Capri, etc. - but IMO it lacks the charm of the tiny Amalfi Coast towns.
true...i've heard that it's not charming and it's not really the amalfi coast either - it just seemed easy to get to from naples and well a convenient base for hopping to the other smaller coast towns.....but ok..it all depends onthe villa...if i get it in positano for our budget and for the # of ppl we are then...it's positano!!
Thanks again for the beach info.
>>>arriving in Naples and immediately departing for Sorrento (as the base) because I thought it may be too much travel after having traveled from San Francisco....on the other hand I understand it's just a 1 hr train ride at best?<<<

No, it's a bus ride from the Naples airport (you don't even go into Naples) to Sorrento. You catch the Curreri bus right outside the terminal at the airport. Your luggage is stored under the bus. 10€ per person. Select the airport link on the right to get bus departure times.
http://www.curreriviaggi.it/inglese/E_index.html
If you don't think you will enjoy staying in Sorrento, you can stay at a hotel in the hills above. Most offer free shuttle buses to town hourly except for mid-afternoon. The Aminta might be out of your price range. You would have to check your dates. Il Nido doesn't have a pool, but has great views.

thank you!
If you do go to Naples, I'd recommend you stay in Naples. We loved it. I don't think I'd enjoy the travel to get in and out. Our hotel was very nice: Meuble Santa Chiara and super affordable. The B&B Medea that Michael recommends also seemed nice. Just look for air conditioning!
The restaurants in Naples were delicious and a fairly good value.
We were in Positano in late September and I thought the crowds were a bit much. We stayed at the Rifugio degli Dei, about a 20 minute walk from town and 300 steps above the main road at Arienza. They have 3 small apartments and we really loved our time there.
To my mind, Sorrento gets a bad rap. It's a large town not on the Amalfi Coast but situated on a cliff above the Gulf of Naples and has a view of Mt. Vesuvius. Go to Google images and look up Sorrento. You'll see it's quite beautiful. It's kind of a lushly planted town, benefitting by the volcanic ash in the soil. And it does have good transportation connections -- to Capri. Pompeii and Herculaeneum, and Naples as well as the Amalfi Coast. And it has a choice of restaurants.
Whereas Positano is a small, steep town full of expensive hotels and expensive boutiques for rich tourists. I prefer Amalfi or one of the smaller towns on the AC to Positano.
Agree with Mimar, especially if you get a great hotel or villa with great views. Just because it isn't actually on the AC doesn't mean the Sorrento location isn't beautiful.
You are right that the AC isn't best known for wonderful beaches. That is why I think a pool in August is a must. I would still stick with the AC for your trip. It is, IMHO, one of the most beautiful places I've been, for me - surpassing even the Greek Islands of Mykonos and Santorini. It is a great combination with Turkey, depending on how much time you are allowing for Turkey.
othank you folks!
yes that's what i figured that AC is worth seeing at least once...if not more.....we've now decided to go June 21-July 7 - so there has been that flexibility with dates phew. Greece is out of the question as one couple has already been and does not want to repeat (that is however my first choice, easiest when paired with turkey but oh well).
we'll stick with amalfi. Turkey is another 10 days...we're going to attempt istanbul, Ephesus, Pammukale and Hot air balloon over Cappodochia....and back to Istanbul.
Our flights are...what can I say....right now for June Expedia shows 1500 for flying into Naples and out of Istanbul. Naples to Istanbul one way ticket on cheapoair is 289$ so that's a whopping $1700 flight from SFO.
$1500 from SFO isn't bad - I am looking at $1850 (as of this morning) from PDX (Portland) to Naples! I know that Villa le Sirene has some vacancies for the time you are going to be on the Amalfi Coast - I just emailed with Chiara the owner today.
I don't think you will regret the AC. After four visits, I would return at any opportunity. The scenic beauty wows me every time. I had looked forward to Greece for years and enjoyed it, but more by the archeological sites than scenic beauty. Turkey, however, was the biggest Wow of my travels, with Cappodochia (balloon ride) being at the top. Your trip will be fantastic and the new dates are even better.
oh my gosh im so excited - thank you so much!!! I too feel like turkey will be wow and amalfi so pretty (from the il postino??) movie long back haha.
ok so 1700 from portland wow. ekc are you going around that time as well as we are? are you going to book your flights now or wait ? i just wonder how this game works...esp for the summer months.
I will check out Villa le Sirene.
Sassafrass - do you know of any transportation such as driver/van (to accomodate 8 of us) within turkey? i want to do a road trip from istanbul to cappodochia....vs train or bus.
thank you again!
Yes, I am going the last week of June (and I did the same week in Positano last year). Although right now it is looking to be closer to $1850, I am hoping it will go down to closer to $1700. I usually wait to book my tickets until January - hoping for some post-holiday dip in fares. But I check fares every day (looking at Luftansa and United right now) and if I see a decent drop in fares I will jump on it. There just aren't as many options flying from the West Coast (except the Alitalia direct from LAX).
Good luck!!
thanks!! For those of you who recommended I land in naples and immediately head to my base in the Amalfi Coast - is that possible to do if my flight lands at 9pm in Naples? are there buses in the summer that depart past 9pm from naples into the coast?
that is one option in flight that shows right now - the cheapest. and for that option i may end up having to stay in Naples for about 2 days and see Pompeii from Naples before heading to the coast....
I don't know for sure but I doubt the buses run from Naples to the A/C past 9 p.m. (which would really be 10 p.m. after going through passport control, getting luggage, etc.). If you are getting in that late, I would consider staying in Naples at least 1 night.
Sorry, I misspelled Cappodocia the first time.
Have you looked into flights from Naples to Nevsehir or Kayseri - the airports that service Cappodocia? Would definitely be my first choice.
The times we've hired vans have not been fun and I won't do it again. With eight people, you will also need room for luggage, so it would have to be a pretty big van. Others may have had a better experience.
After tons of research, we decided to fly between Istanbul and Cappodocia. We landed at Ataturk, short layover, and straight on to Cappodocia. Since your flight from Naples is shorter, this would work especially well for you if you must fly into Istanbul first. Saves time and money by not going into Istanbul for a night first. RT on Turkish Air was $110 from Ist to Cap.
Unless there is something on that road trip you must see, I suggest saving as much travel time as possible and visit the coast instead.
When you start a thread on Turkey, you will get lots more great info. People really helped me with planning our time there.
If your flight is landing that late, then do stay the night in Naples and visit Pompeii on your way to (Sorrento?) the next day. You will be tired, but if you go on so late that night, I think the whole next day will be shot. If you stay in Naples that night, you have a fighting chance of a decent nights sleep.
Turkish Airlines has summer promotion tickets until 11 Dec turkishairlines.com (English available)
IMO you had better do
Naples-İstanbul(131 EUR one way) ex:9 jul ALITALIA(skyscanner)
İstanbul-Nevşehir(43 USD return) ex: 9 jul-11 jul THY
İstanbul-İzmir (return)(43 USD return) ex: 11 jul-15 jul THY
İzmir-Kuşadası/Ephesus-İzmir(bus/midibus)
İzmir-Denizli/Pamukkale-İzmir(bus)
glad to help you more
got it, thank you all so much...let me look into the suggestions for turkey and i'll defly post inthe turkey forum as well
thanks again everyone - you've been so helpful!
folks, i've finalized my itinerary, please review and let me know if anything is irrational.....thank you again.
22 Land in Naples - looking for a morning/afternoon arrival into Naples. Go directly to Amalfi via Bus. Change the bus at Amalfi to Conca Dei Marini (this is where we found a villa with pool for 8 people). OR take private taxi for 180 euros for 8 ppl directly to the villa from Naples.
23 Relax and enjoy the villa
24 Day tour by boat from Amalfi to Capri - 3 hour hop off at Capri, (includes Blue Grotto), tour covers Ravello, Positano, Atrani by boat
25 Spend day in Positano....maybe after lunch take the boat to sorrento....have coffee there in the main square...and then take the bus ride back to Amalfi. (the infamous bus ride along the coast from Sorrento to Amalfi) I don't know if there will be a return bus early evening???
26 I would like to see Ravello, Villa Cimbrone and walk down to Amalfi (90 minutes). BUT I also have to visit Pompeii so today may need to be Pompeii excursion.
27 We check out of villa and head to Naples. Overnight in Naples. I would like to see Pompeii here on the way to Naples. But we will have our luggage. And we will need to go from our Villa in Conca dei Marini to Amalfi first. Take bus to Sorrento??? Then the train to Pompeii?? Leave luggage. Sightsee Pompeii then take train to Naples in evening. Is this stupid or doable with careful planning? Otherwise take private taxi to Pompeii, leave luggage, sightsee, and take train to Naples?
28 flight to Istanbul from Naples.
Any advice??
A few thoughts...
On the 25th: Take the bus from Amalfi to Positano. It will drop you all off at the TOP of Positano. Work your downhill through the town during the course of your time there until you end up at the water. From there, take a ferry back to Amalfi. Positano, as you may know is built on the side of a hill and is mostly stairs (check Google images). At least this way, you'll all spend most of the day going DOWN steps.
On the 24th: I'm pretty sure that boat tour does not include Ravello (which is landlocked)...
You really need at least 3-4 days just to see Naples (even without visits to the archeological museum or Pompeii) a week would be better. You don't have the days this time, of course, as there is no where to cut. But do keep it in mind for a future trip.
Most importantly - be prepared to split up and have smaller groups going different places. That means everyone having maps/schedules/transport info on them. You can always plan time together for the evening meal to share the days adventures (dinner typically starts after 8 pm in Italy).
Seven people traveling together can be VERY unwieldy and there is no way everyone will always want to see and do the exact same things or go to the exact same places. EVERYONE in your group should be travel savvy enough to get around by foot, bus, train, and ferry without someone (you?) holding their hand.
Stay flexible for Capri, especially, and also for Pompeii and other outdoor things, as they will be weather dependent. You may have to rearrange your agenda if there will be a bad day.
thanks folks! Does the 27th seem doable???? As in, will i be able to leave my luggage at Pompeii sightsee and move on to Naples??
That would be an ideal trip....the folks wanna split countries and hence we're off to Turkey...but I will surely return to the Amalfi Coast one day I know...with just me and my husband...so at that point I will make sure to sightsee it in a much more leisurely way.
I know traveling with 8 ppl....i've done it twice before...it was fun....but trying at times.
And yes, definitely am prepared for splitting up. The option is I can do Naples and Amalfi coast for the entire two weeks that I have....
>>>22 Land in Naples - looking for a morning/afternoon arrival into Naples. Go directly to Amalfi via Bus.<<<
You might consider taking the Ali bus from the airport to the port and catching a ferry to Amalfi. Check ferry schedules in late spring to see if the times would work. Otherwise, I would take the Curreri shuttle bus from the airport to Sorrento (10€) and catch the Sita bus on to Amalfi.
>>>And we will need to go from our Villa in Conca dei Marini to Amalfi first. Take bus to Sorrento???<<<
You should be able to catch the Sita bus to Sorrento in the lower town of Conca dei Marini. From Sorrento you would catch the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii.
http://www.summerinitaly.com/planning/transportation_amalfi_positano_meta_sorrento.asp
There is a different Sita bus that you should be able to catch in the upper part of Conca that goes to Naples. It has a stop in Castellammare which is very close to Pompeii (only 9 minutes by Circumvesuviana train). This bus is also a possibility for arrival day - bus from Naples to Conca. I doubt these schedules are up to date so you would need to check next summer when the new schedules are out.

>>>>As in, will i be able to leave my luggage at Pompeii sightsee and move on to Naples??<<<
Yes. There is free storage at the entrance to Pompeii.
HI all, thank you so much!
We were able to get our flights only for Saturday June 22nd arrival at 9pm into Naples. So we are going to have the villa pick us up directly so we can enjoy Sunday at the villa in the coast vs staying overnight in Naples.
we were planning to come back to naples on June 27th after a morning villa checkout and then see Pompeii on the 28th and depart for Istanbul on the 29th early morning flight. We would then have 29th, 30th and then the 6th in istanbul, however now there is only one afternoon flight on the 29th so Istanbul gets cut short as we arrive only at 5pm. To avoid that, I am debating doing what the posts above have suggested:
27th, check out of villa, on the way to Naples see Pompeii, overnight in Naples.
28th, flight out to Istanbul.
29th, 30th, 6th - we have 3 whole days in istanbul this way.
Yes I understand I'm missing Naples....but i don't want to rush both naples and istanbul by trying to see both...
does this make sense....? am i missing anything in my thought process?
thank you!
Looks good. If I had to pick between time in Naples and time in Istanbul, Istanbul wins every time. Your 3 days will pass in a flash.
How are you getting from the villa to Pompeii and from Pompeii to the Naples airport?
thank you
)
that....i don't know...here's what the earlier post suggested: and we'll have our luggage which I guess I need to leave at the Pompeii luggage station.....
You should be able to catch the Sita bus to Sorrento in the lower town of Conca dei Marini. From Sorrento you would catch the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii.

Looks like you're all set and have a sound plan.
I would like to STRONGLY recommend this place for your one night in Naples. It is smack in the center of the historic district and an easy walk to the dozen or so "must see" renaissance era churches - to make the most of your very limited time there. It's in the midst of the best restaurants, cafes, shops, etc. Highest rating on tripadvisor too. And a bargain (about €100-120 for an enormous room).
http://www.decumani.com/en/
fabulous thank you! i'll get on it asap!
Hi everyone,

I've finally booked my flights!
We land in Naples June 22 night and will be spending June 23 in the villa in Conca dei Marini in between Positano and Amalfi towns.
June 24 - plan is to bus to amalfi town from conca, bus to Positano, walk down to the beach and enjoy Fornillo.
June 25 - we plan to bus to Ravello from amalfi town, check out villa cimbrone and hike down to Atrani, enjoy the area and walk to amalfi and have dinner there.
June 26 - I'm torn between visiting Capri, avoiding it altogether for another day spent on Laureto beach near Positano, or more hiking (above Amalfi town and exploring the paper mills and the town in general) or Santa Croce beach in Amalfi or La Gavitella beach in Praiano i hear is good for hanging out in the water
June 27 - we'll be heading to Pompeii and then to naples at night.
June 28 - we depart for Istanbul. I don't mind we're not seeing naples too much on this trip - i have to devote more time to Istanbul this time. Naples - for another trip
Any recos on any other beaches where the water is warm, calm, shallow to hang out in? Do i have to be wary of rocks in the water or stones...water shoes perhaps? Are Laureto/Fornillo etc this way?
thanks so much!

You might want to visit the Villa Rufolo and Ravello's cathedral, too!
This sounds like a great plan!
We liked Arienzo beach - it's between you and Positano and just make sure you get off at the stop. You'll walk down many stairs and it's very nice. I wore teva's - water sandals. The place we stayed had a glossy book on the '100 best beaches of the Amalfi Coast' or something like that. The book said Arienzo beach was the best and since it was also the closest, we never tried a different one.
I also loved the hiking above on the Sentiero degli dei. We walked up but it is also possible to take a bus up to the top so that you avoid the long, steep climb but still get a nice hike and the incredible views. You might want to buy the guidebook 'Walking on the Amalfi Coast' by Gillian Price. I have it on my kindle.
I also really liked the paper museum. It helped me see the history of the area.
The New York Times travel section has a little article about a family who grows lemons near Amalfi and has a shop in town. You might want to track that down so you make sure you're having the very best lemon products!
