Dock, are you planning to see Pompeii? We had only 2 hours in Pompeii and it wasn't even close to enough time. It takes at least 4 hours to see Pompeii.

Wow that wa sa quick response thanks Melissajoy. Yes we were hoping to spend 2-3 hours at Pompeii. We have 2 kids with us and I feel that would be enough for them to take in one place and then head on to Sorrento for a couple of hours. Naples does not seem to have too much to do unless I have not read enough on it.

Dock, what time in the morning do you arrive in Naples? What time of the year?

Can anybody tell dock how far it is from the pier to the train station? Walk or Taxi?

What's the train schedule from Naples to Pompeii?

How long does the train take to get to Pompeii? then from Pompeii to Sorrento?

What are the boat schedules from Sorrento to Naples?

So, I think if you have train/boat schedules, (I think someone out there would be able to help and provide links) you should be able to figure out if you can do it, and fit in lunch.

Dock, another option would be take the ferry (it leaves right there next to the cruise ship piers) to Capri and spend the day touring the island.

Good luck.

The usual links don't seem to have schedules right now. www.metrodelmare.com had ferry info but is now saying suspended and www.vesuviana.it has train prices but you can't access the schedule anymore. Ferry/hydrofoil times will be dependent on the season you are traveling. You can taxi from the port to the Naples train station and catch the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii Scavi station for 2.2E and travel time should be approximately 30-45 minutes. From Pompeii to Sorrento will be another 30 minutes and 1.8E

Hi Budman, now why do I not ask questions like you do? Are you a teacher by any cahnce? Ship docks at 7am. Travlling in July 2005. 7 days pre-cruise doing Cinque Terre and Rome, stopping 1 night in Orvieto day before cruise as its 1 and 1/2 hour drive to port. Its possible that we may be trying to do too much in one day and I will review that. The ship has an excursion that does this but its listed as 8 hours. So we will consider this as I fear that the planning and logistics of this tour independently may actually prevent us enjoying ourselves. Second option is just doing Capri. I am starting to wonder if this cruise is such a great idea now as there is so much to see and so little time and I do not want to be rushing around every day on this cruise else I will need a weekend break at a lake to recover when I get back home.Faye.

Dock, we did the Med cruise in 2001, and it's tough to do so much in a few hours. You just have to pick & chose.

We chose Capri and spent the day wandering around the island, had lunch, ferry back & forth, and had an enjoyable day without having to feel rushed. You can do this fairly reasonably without taking a cruise ship tour, which is very expensive.

DOCK, you wrote that you are beginning to wonder if the cruise is a good idea because there is so much to see. That is exactly why I would not take a cruise, when you factor in the time spent in any given port it is pitiful.

I think a cruise would only be good if you are planning to just relax and don't really have an agenda of sights to see on land.

If you decide to plan your own trip there will be alot of help given here on Fodors.

Hi Dock. We are also going on a med. cruise, but our's leaves in a couple of weeks on the 22nd of November. The cruise ship that we are on is the Pullmantur Oceanic. I was origionally thinking about goint to pompeii, sorrento, and time permitting Capri, but I see that this will be to much. Our ship arrives Napoli at 1100 and depts at 2000. We have elected to do Pompei and Sorrento only. There is a train from Napoli that goes to both pompei and Sorrento. I found the web sight (vesuviana.it/) and it gives directions on how to get from the ship to the train terminal. I also have a web sight that gives the train time table, should you need it, I will e.mail to you. Hope that this helps. I will keep you informed on how the trip went when I get back.

Faye - No need to go to the expense of the ship's excursion. You can do it very easily and cheaply yourselves.

It's a ten-minute tram ride (- or taxi) from the dock to the station (Piazza Garibaldi) - from where there are trains (Circumvesuviana) every 30 mins for Pompei. Here's the timetable:

www.massalubrense.it/circum.htm

Get off at POMPEI SCAVI.
Naples-Pompei Scavi takes about 35 mins.
Fare: € 1.80

You should be there soon after opening time.

You could then head to Sorrento about lunchtime. You can find Pompei-Sorrento train times on the same link.

From Sorrento there's a fast boat back to Naples at 16.25.
Journey time: 35 mins
Fare: approx. €7.50

Hope this helps ...

Hi dock,

>Naples does not seem to have too much to do unless I have not read enough on it. <

I suggest that you do a little more reading.

In addition to the Archaeological Museum (which has most of the good stuff from Pompeii), the Museo Nazionale, Museo de Capodimonte, the Duomo, the Capella Sansevero (Veiled Christ), the waterfront, Castel dell'Ovo, Castel Nuovo, Piazza Plebiscito, the streets of the Spanish Quarter and Spaccanapoli, you can get some really good pizza.

Thanks for all the help. Will look for your review Chris. Thanks for the website Steve. I do think it will be doable especially if we make that ferry back at around 4 it will give us plenty of time to make the ship. Ira, i will read further about Naples. Thanks agin everyone.
