Hello 4greatkids. You do not say which part of Italy you will be in but I can say this. GO! Just pack for some possible cold weather. Layering is best. And I would take a coat, gloves etc. If it is rainy you can have fun buying an umbrella. If you will be in the northern part it will probably be colder then in Rome or further south. But the weather has been so unusual in Italy these last years the residents there don't even know what to expect. Have fun and enjoy the wonderful winter food!!!

LoveItaly, is the food different in Italy in Winter? I was there in May/June this year and the food seemed quite substabtial!! Thinking of going in January with my grandaughter. I have to pay full-fare for her flights after June 6 - her 12th birthday.

Hi 4greatkds, well I live in N CA and the sunset in Italy is about the same as we have here. They go on standard time also. Regarding any possible flooding, "alta acqua" that happens when there is a lot of heavy rain and the high tide. Don't let that worry you. You probably won't even get any but if you do Venice is prepared. They put out the wooden walkways in the Piazza San Marco (which is usually only where the high water is). Actually as I and a few others posted on another recent thread here it is sort of fun. Not to worry. It is almost a shame not to experience it at last once. And if you get an electrical storm (which Venice had during the film festival the other day)...mother nature puts on a spectacular show...I would pay admission to see them, LOL. Rome even had electrical storms in June. And speaking of Rome, you could find very pleasant weather. That is why packing so that you can layer clothes is good. Just think, you can start stripping while walking through historical Rome, LOL. But seriously, I don't think anyone including the residents can guess what the weather will be like anymore. Rather the same where I live here in N Ca.

Embe, the food in winter is prepared for cold weather rather like we do here in the states (I assume you are in the US). We eat lighter in summer and then turn to winter soups, stews, potroasts etc. in winter. Same thing in Italy. I am sure you will love the food. One of my favorite is rabbit dishes although I know that a lot of people don't want to eat that. Their lentil soup is very good also. Well actually IMHO most of the food in Italy is so delicious.

BTW, for both of you. If you get cold easily think about taking a pair or two of silk "long johns" that you can wear under your pants, tops etc. Very lightweight for packing and will really help keep you warm. Easy to wash out and dry also. They work well for men also.

Italians love their gloves and scarves but if you don't have any that is something you would have fun buying in Italy. We all need something to shop for right?

Although there is nothing I love more then sitting at an outdoor table in a beautiful piazza I have to say the weather during the summer has gotten so hot in Italy I think the colder weather is more appealing to me now, due to the unusual weather changes. And there is nothing cozier then going into a restaurant on a cold and rainy night, the warmth of the room, the friendly service, the rich red Italian wine to warm you up, the fabulous food, perhaps a nice cup of espresso after dinner while you relax. Magnifico!!!

And EmBe, you and your granddaughter. Perfect!!! I love traveling with children and all children love Italy. Only problem is that she will probably be nagging you to take her again and again. I want to get my 14 year old grandson to Italy. Haven't done it yet. School gets in the way or something else. Have a beautiful time.

Thank you LoveItaly! Why dont you join us? I live in Melbourne Australia so the fares and long travelling times take some consideration!

The food sounds delicious and like you, I dont enjoy the extreme heat of summer these days.

I will be eternally grateful for your encouragement to travel to Italy last summer. I took your advice and each thing you suggested was invaluable.
Perhaps I will book now for Venice and Rome. Of course everything is much less expensive in Winter - flights are about half the price!

If I were you 4greatkds, I wouldnt EVER knock back an opportunity to go to Italy! Have you been before?

Hello EmBee, have I mentioned my father was raised in Australia and lived for some of the time in Melbourne (although he was born in Wellington NZ)? That of course was many decades ago. EmBee, join you in Italy, ahh there is a tempting thought. I shouldn't say this but I have had the urge to go to Italy without spending all the times with friends there...just for once.

I don't know how you dear people in Oz manage to fly all the way from Australia to Europe. I think it is such a long flight from California to Europe but know it is nothing like what you have to go through. Are you going to do what is called an "open jaw flight" where say you fly into Venice and return home from Rome so that you do not have to backtrack to the original airport? This would save you some precious travel time.

And 4greatkds, I agree with EmBee, don't give up a chance to go to beautiful Italy.

I had no idea you where half-Austalian/Kiwi Loveitaly! Have you been down here? I was also born in New Zealand and lived in Wellington thru most of my childhood.

I have only ever read of 'open jaw' flights on Fodors. I must look into it. We use the same airlines as you
do in the US.

Perhaps you should join us!! I'm sure we could have a good deal of fun together. I wonder whether my 11 yr old granddaughter and your 14 yr old grandson would relate to one another!!

Hello EmBee, well I never thought of myself as a Kiwi but many years ago I got collared into being the hostess in Napa Valley by a dear older women who "forgot" that she had many ambassadors from the UN coming to her residence...long story, don't ask LOL.

So my husband and I were the host and hostess for this lovely event and consequently were the reception line so to speak and of course greeted each gentleman. When the New Zealand amabassador was introduced and we chatted and he found out that my dear father had been born in Wellington he said to me "but my dear woman, you ARE a Kiwi!" Oh my, that touched my heart for sure.

And no EmBee I have not been to either NZ or Australia. I am sorry to say my late DH and I were in the process of making plans for this trip when I suddenly lost him. He had been to NZ and loved it so much. He said that he never met friendly and more relaxed people then the people of NZ. I have such a yearning to go "down under". But haven't. I guess because I don't, or should I now say "didn't" know anyone there. Are you familar with One Travelling Jew here on Fodor's. She spent a delightful time in Australia. I wish I had recorded all the places in Australia where my father lived. Defintly Melbourne and also Sydney. He always talked about how Christmas Day, after the roastbeef/yourkshire pudding dinner he and his pals would spend the rest of the day on Bondi Beach. His story and how he came to the US is a long and commplicated story also.

Now about Italy. EmBee, here in the states the children start school the day after New Years Day. And heaven help them if they don't. And my grandson is just starting his first year of high school. There is no way I could take him out of school to bring him to Italy although I assure you he would love to go. And I am sure he and your granddaughter would have had so much fun. He is a great young gentleman. He loves to travel, he loves people, he loves music and art, historical buildings etc. I take him to San Francisco from time to time for a few nights and one couldn't have a better travel partner.

About Italy. When in January are you going? And for how long? You said you want to go to Venice and Rome, correct. I haven't been for a few years for one reason or another. I was going to go this September but I didn't make plans as my daughter and Rome born and bred son-in- law had to suddenly go to Rome for the month of June as my SIL got an urgent phone call that both of his parents were in hospitals. They rushed to Rome and were there for the month. I had the grandsons. Then July was confusing for various reasons and by August I just needed to relax. So I did not make any plans for Italy for this autumn.

We need to talk more. I only have one email address at this moment which I do not want to put here on this public forum. Let's get back to each other. We are rather hijacking 4greatkds thread I am afraid. My apologies 4greatkds.

EmBee, lets post on the Australian Forum. Start a new thread. I think that would be best. Best wishes to you.
